PhD student: A systems analysis of rodent animal models of human disease

Especially rodents, mainly mouse and rat, are often used for this purpose, as well as for pre-clinical trials of new drugs and toxicology screens. However, often animal models fail to mimic human disease adequately. As a consequence drugs successfully tested in animal models fail in costly clinical trials or are falsely discarded.
Goal of this project is to explore the suitability of rodents as a model organism for human disease, specifically metabolic syndrome. Since metabolic syndrome is a complex multifactorial group of metabolic conditions, a systems approach will be taken to uncover the molecular networks perturbed by disease.
Specifically, we aim to validate the similarity of a large number of rodent models for metabolic syndrome to their human counterparts. The project is tightly linked to ongoing projects in biological and clinical groups at the AMC. This project is part of the second round of the BioRange programme of the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC; ww.nbic.nl).
Tasks
The successful candidate will work towards a PhD degree in bioinformatics. We will build a compendium of rodent and human metabolic syndrome related gene expression datasets. We develop module-based joint analysis methods that search for conserved patterns consisting of sets of genes and sets of conditions in both rodent model and human under which they are co-expressed. These patterns are used to evaluate the molecular similarity of rodent models and their human counterpart. Conserved patterns will be further interpreted by constructing functional networks for metabolic syndrome in rodents and human. We expect methods developed and resulting conserved patterns and functional networks to be useful for elucidating the model mismatch and for increasing the predictive value of preclinical trials and toxicity screens.
Requirements
We are looking for an enthusiastic communicative team player with
• a MSc in one of the following areas: bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, statistics, physics, plus a proven interest in biology
• strong background in computer science (machine learning, graph algorithms, relational databases)
• good programming knowledge (R, C/Java/C++, SQL)
Additional conditions of employment: The appointment will be on temporary basis for a maximum period of four years. Based on a full-time appointment (36 hours per week), compensation will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students starting with a salary of € 2046,- with a yearly growth to € 2622,- gross a month. The Institute for Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science will be offering two PhD Scholarships which will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus a maintenance grant at the same rate as the Research Councils (£12,960 per annum in 2008-09). Recipients will be expected to do some teaching as part of the terms of the Scholarship. The Scholarships will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic performance. Candidates must hold a good Honours degree (First or 2i) or a Master's degree at merit or distinction in a relevant subject or equivalent.

QUT's School of Economics and Finance is seeking three PhD students to undertake study in the areas of behavioural economics and applied microeconometrics.

The scholarships are attached to a large international research group sponsored by the Australian Research Council, AusAid, the World Bank, the Ford Foundation and the German Labour Institute (IZA) as well as an international collaboration with European companies.

The successful applicants will work with researchers from the Australian National University and the QUT-based National Centre for Econometric Research.

They will be expected to follow standard economic PhD coursework in all fields of economics and to engage in a variety of analyses, such as handling large-scale data sets on migration in China, performing economic experiments in Australia with and without measuring heart rates, or developing a theoretical view of human decision making (including migration, network formation and attitudes towards risk and collaboration) .

KSOP Masters Education. We believe that a Ph.D.graduate school is unlikely to be successful without the background / infrastructure and the “funneling / filtering” through a corresponding associated, interdisciplinary coordinated masters program, aiming at attracting excellent students from abroad.

36 students per year can be admitted to our masters program. The best students of the masters program are supported by the KSOP Scholarship Program. Access to the KSOP masters education is granted via an application procedure.

A study plan is developed for each individual masters student (corresponding to his/her educational background) when entering the KSOP.

The M.Sc. course is divided into four stages providing the students with the necessary prerequisites (Stage I: Introduction) , to give them a solid background on the most important topics within the wide and diverse field of Optics and Photonics (Stage II: Core Subjects) and let them acquire specialized knowledge (Stage III: Specialization) to be able to competently perform a six-month research project on a current topic of research (masters thesis). In addition, an 8-weeks industrial internship is scheduled between stages 2 and 3.

Scholarship

The KSOP scholarship amounts to 800 Euro/month for international students and 400 Euro/month for German students. Part of the scholarship is a research assistantship. Within the scope of this assistantship, you will have the opportunity to work on a research project in one of the KSOP institutes.

The scholarship is first admitted for 12 months. At the end you have to proof your successful participation in the KSOP M.Sc. Program through very good study results in order to extend the scholarship for another 12 months.

You can apply for a scholarship at the KSOP Office after having applied for the program M.Sc. in Optics & Photonics. Please fill out the KSOP Scholarship application form. The application deadline for the upcoming winter semester is July 15 each year.

Since 2006, the German Research Foundation (DFG) provides funding to Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig to maintain an International Researchm Training Group (IRTG) together with the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm (coordinators: Sebastian Suerbaum, Hannover, and Birgitta Henriques-Normark, Stockholm). The central aim of the programme is to
give young researchers the opportunity to perform their PhD work in the rapidly moving field of the infection biology of human microbial pathogens in a highly stimulating, competitive, international environment. The core element of the IRTG is a joint research programme centering on the question how human microbial pathogens achieve acute or persistent infection and how the host organism reacts to persistent infection. In addition, graduate students will participate in a highly interdisciplinary joint study programme.

Stipends will be 1365 €/month and are available for up to three years. It is an integral part of the programme that PhD students spend 6-12 months in one of the partner labs at the Karolinska Institute.

Candidates who hold the equivalent of a master’s or diploma degree in Biology, Biochemistry or Life Sciences, or who graduated in medicine are welcome to apply. Those applicants who are selected for interviews in a first round of screening will be asked to attend a selection workshop in Hannover to be held June 10 / 11, 2009.

We are seeking highly motivated PhD Students to work in the program "Function and pathophysiology of the auditory system" at the Hannover Medical School, in Hannover, Germany.

The goal of our group is to investigate neural mechanisms of human auditory system by using event-related potentials (32-channel system, Brain Products). Experiments will involve healthy controls, as well as subjects with cochlear implants (CI). An emphasis will be placed on the processing of language-related irregularities as well as music perception. All studies are conducted in collaboration with the Clinic for Laryngology, Rhinology and Otology.

The research will be conducted at the Hannover Medical School (http://mh-hannover. de) in Hannover, Germany, which is one of the world's leading university medical centers. Our research and patient care set national and international standards. We are also part of an excellent regional medical network. Our outstanding success in interdisciplinary collaboration both within the MHH and with extramural scientific institutions is reflected in the fact that the MHH is the German medical university with the greatest volume of grant funding.

PhD positions:
The candidates must have a master degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, medicine, psychology, or a related field. Proficiency in oral and written English is necessary. PhD students will have the opportunity to participate in the Center of Systems Neuroscience.

Job description
Area (a) The advertised positions will offer the opportunity to follow a self-defined PhD project in the general research orientation at IRU.
Innovation, the creation of new, technologically feasible, commercially realisable
products and processes, is permanently emerging from an ongoing interaction process of innovative organisations such as universities, research institutes, firms, government agencies, venture capitalists and others. These actors generate and exchange knowledge, financial capital, and other resources in networks of relationships which are embedded in institutional frameworks on the
local, regional, national and international level. While the contexts of innovation
performance provide turbulent environments with high uncertainty and ambiguity, innovation networks in complex social systems typically show characteristics such as multi-scale interactions with high contingency and nonlinearity, emergent behaviour, pattern formation, and self-organisation. IRU's research deals with governance issues of innovation networks in complex social systems. Most projects combine a conceptual framework of complexity science and social systems theory with computational methods such as network analysis, agent-based modelling and social simulation. Successful candidates need to apply with a project idea fitting this framework.
Area (b)
The advertised positions at IRU (UCD Innovation Research Unit, http://casl. ucd.ie/iru) are funded by UCD´s Vice-President for Research. IRU works in an environment that will commission independent, multidisciplinary research focused on the broad role, drivers and impacts of innovation.
It will advance knowledge of a broad definition of innovation through high-quality,
independent research which is fully engaged with policy and practitioner communities. It will ensure the maximum impact of new knowledge on policy and practice and develop capacity, in terms of people, data and methods, for future research and knowledge exchange. Successful candidates need to engage fully with the mission of IRU and assist in establishing the unit.

The Positions Since IRU is an interdisciplinary research environment, any disciplinary
background of the PhD candidates are welcome. We are looking for excellent candidates from the natural and social sciences with an interest in combining empirical research and modelling activities for complex systems, in our case innovation systems. A sound background in research methods using both, quantitative (prominently social network analysis and agent-based simulation) and qualitative methods is mandatory though UCD offers the possibility for starting PhDs with a bachelor degree. Organisational skills, love for detail, and social competence would be desirable; very good written and oral English, and permanent residence in Dublin/Ireland is mandatory.
In addition to the superior payment, this positions provide the opportunity to
work in an international research team doing cutting-edge innovation research.
The successful candidates will enrol in the new PhD Programme "Complex Systems and Computational Social Science" at UCD and will receive a PhD degree adapted to the disciplinary area of their main supervisors which can be from the natural or from the social sciences.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
- University degree in economics or applied economics, preferably at MPhil level
- Strong analytic and technical capabilities in modern economic methods

The Department of Economics at the University of Alicante (FAE), Spain,is offering Teaching and Research Assistantship to students enrolling in the Graduate Program.

The Graduate Program is a full-time program leading to a doctoral degree (Ph.D.). The program is taught entirely in English and it provides students with a thorough theoretical and practical training to do independent high-level economic research. The program prepares students for professional careers in universities, public and private research organizations, international institutions, consultancy and business.
Students with strong quantitative skills and good academic qualifications are encouraged to apply.

Students are supported by an international faculty that is recruited from top American and European universities, such as MIT and LSE. The faculty has a high academic reputation publishing in top journals, such as the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy and Econometrica.

We invite applications for the position of a Research Assistant / PhD student to work within the Dialogue Group at the Department of Linguistics, University of Potsdam, Germany. The position is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional two years.

The successful applicant will work in the context of the project ``InPro: Incrementality and Projection in Dialogue Processing', which aims to investigate incremental processing methods for spoken dialogue systems. The main resposibility for the incoming RA / PhD student will be in the area of dialogue management. The team comprises one other PhD student and one Post-Doc.

Ideal candidates for the RA / PhD position have an excellent degree in Computational Linguistics, Linguistics, or Computer Science, and have shown ability for conducting original research. Prior work on dialogue systems and especially dialogue management would be a definite plus. Good programming skills are important, a keen interest in problem solving and research is essential. The successful candidate is encouraged to work towards a PhD degree in Computational Linguistics from the University of Potsdam.

The working language of the project is English.

Applications are invited for a three year post-doctoral position, based at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, to conduct neuro-imaging research into the dynamic neural systems underlying human language comprehension, working in an interdisciplinary cross-linguistic research environment, with access to state-of-the art MEG (306-channel Elekta/Neuromag VectorView) and MRI (Siemens Trio 3T) imaging facilities.

This position is funded by an interdisciplinary EPSRC (UK) grant to Lorraine Tyler (Centre for Speech Language and Brain, Cambridge), William Marslen-Wilson (MRC-CBSU), Anna Korhonen (Computing Lab, Cambridge) and Paula Buttery (Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics) , which aims to integrate research in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psycholinguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Modern advances in NLP provide much more realistic analyses of the statistical properties of language use. The aim of the project is to integrate these analyses with neuro-imaging investigations of how brain systems respond to variations in the statistical properties of linguistic inputs at different levels of description (morphological, syntactic, semantic).

You should have doctoral training in neuro-imaging with a strong interest in studying the neuro-cognition of language, and a willingness to take on the challenge of systematically relating the statistical properties of linguistic inputs to the statistical properties of the dynamic neural
response to these inputs.

The starting salary will be in the range of £25,368 - £31,048 per annum, depending upon qualifications and experience. This is supported by a flexible pay and reward policy, and optional MRC final salary Pension Scheme. We offer 30 days annual leave entitlement. On site parking is
available.

University of Kent MA Scholarships Available for January 2009

University of Kent's Brussels School of International Studies

Applications are invited for two scholarships for politics students wishing to begin their studies at the University of Kent's Brussels School of International Studies in January 2009.

Successful candidates will be registered at the University of Kent as full-time students on one of the five politics programmes offered at UKB (listed below) and will receive payment to cover 50% of their tuition fees (â‚¬6845 in 2008/9).

These scholarships are open to students of all nationalities and are valid for the following programmes:
MA in International Relations
MA in International Conflict Analysis
MA in International Political Economy
MA in European Public Policy
MA in Political Strategy and Communication

In order to be considered for the scholarship, candidates must both apply for admission to one of these masters programmes and submit a separate scholarship application, no later than the closing date of 15 October 2008.

The mathematics and biosciences group (MaBS, homepage www.mabs.at) at the University of Vienna is looking for a strong and highly motivated candidate for a PhD position in evolutionary modeling and statistical data analysis.

Research environment: Vienna is not only one of the world's most liveable cities, but also offers an excellent research environment and currently develops into one of the main centers in evolutionary research in Europe. The position will be located at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories, part of Vienna's strong bioscience campus.

Project: Due to modern methods of high-throughput sequencing, huge amounts of DNA sequence data from population samples ("polymorphism data") are available today. Interpretation of these data is an important task for theoreticians. In the project, we will develop novel methods to detect so-called footprints of selection in DNA polymorphism data. These footprints can be used to describe the pattern of recent adaptations on a genome. We will particularly focus
on effects of population structure and spatially variable selection on genetic footprints. We will use mathematical methods based on stochastic processes (coalescent theory) and extensive computer simulations. The project is part of an international DFG-research group "Natural Selection in Structured Populations" in collaboration with groups in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Munich, and Mathematics at the University of Freiburg.

Conditions: The position is for three years, salary is according to the FWF standard rates for PhD students in Austria. The starting date is flexible (November 08 or later).

The project is entitled: The Construction of Assurance Expertise on Sustainability

The past decade has seen the emergence of practice in assurance on sustainability reports (‘sustainability assurance') with high profile professional accountancy bodies such as the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, placing the development of a sustainability assurance standard near the top of its strategic agenda. This in-depth longitudinal field study aims to enhance our theoretical and empirical understanding of the processes surrounding the emergence of sustainability assurance. Empirically, the study will examine the role and focus of key actors in the emergence of assurance concentrating on: how competing claims to professional expertise in sustainability assurance have been constructed and legitimised; the dominant and shifting assurance discourses; and how target audiences have reacted to these discourses. Theoretically, the study will draw on frameworks derived from Actor Network Theory and neo-institutional theory. The study calls for a broad range of research methods competencies, particularly in qualitative methods, an excellent ability think conceptually, competence in research liaison with organizations and high level individuals, and excellent external presentation skills.

The Reproductive Biology Research Cluster (RBRC) was established in UCD in 2007. The Cluster comprises a group of highly motivated, internationally recognized scientists from UCD and Teagasc whose research interests focus on fertility in domestic animals using cutting edge technologies, established animal models, in vitro tissue culture and bioinformatic tools for the analysis of reproductive tissues (follicles, oocytes, embryos, uterus). Sample collection and initial processing will be carried out at UCD’s Lyons Research Farm.

The Cluster has recently been award a multi-million Euro grant from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to address specific aspects of female infertility focusing on events in the days immediately before and after fertilization. The overall objective is to identify genes, proteins and other complex molecules, and their expression patterns, in bovine ovarian follicles, oocytes, embryos, cervix and uterus that are responsible for, or are markers of, infertility.

Project Descirption
PhD Projects available include the regulation of MHC-1 expression during preimplantation embryo development and molecular analysis of mammalian oocyte maturation. The endpoint of these experiments is to increase our understanding of the factors, which control the developmental potential of mammalian oocytes and embryos, ultimately leading to the establishment of pregnancy.

Lab work will include mRNA and protein analysis of mammalian reproductive tissues using a range of both standard biotechnology tools such as sequencing, PCR, immunohistochemistr y, western blotting and more innovative bioinformatic dependent methods such as RNASEQ, FAIRESEQ and X-ChIP analysis.
The projects will form part of well structured and carefully supervised PhD programmes according to the University’s postgraduate training policy.

This project is a part of the consortium on New Early Therapies for Intervertebral Disc Diseases: Drug Delivery and Augmentation through Smart Polymeric Biomaterials in the Biomedical Materials Program. Our previously developed osmoviscoelastic model of the disc and mechanoregulation of tissue regeneration will be combined to develop an adaptive biological model of regeneration strategies combining biomaterials, local slow releasing molecular therapies and injectable cell therapies. Model parameters will be determined from in vitro experiments, and the model will be validated against in vivo experiments, mostly conducted by partners in the consortium. Finally the model will be used to select strategies for further development and optimization for use in the clinic.

Job description
The objective of the PhD project is to get a better understanding of the sorption and bioavailability of cationic surfactants in sediments. This knowledge is essential for improving the environmental risk assessment of this class of contaminants. The project is funded by the European Chemical Industry Council and will be performed in collaboration with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Leipzig.

One of the tasks is to improve the analytical procedure for measuring the freely dissolved concentration of cationic surfactants in environmental samples, including sediment suspension. Sorption studies will be performed to elucidate the contribution of sorption to clay minerals to the overall sorption capacity in natural sediments. Measuring freely dissolved concentrations in the pore water phase of a sediment toxicity test will clarify whether adverse effects to biota are solely controlled by the freely dissolved concentration in the pore water.

The Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) is an interfacultary research institute from the faculties Veterinary Medicine and Medicine, and the departments Biology and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Science faculty at the Utrecht University. The mission of IRAS is to provide research and education on human health risks of exposure to potentially harmful agents in the environment, at the workplace and through the food chain. IRAS has three research divisions. The Environmental Epidemiology division performs epidemiological research on respiratory, cardiovascular and carcinogenic health risks in relation to biological and chemical exposures. Within the Veterinary Public Health division research is conducted to identify and study possible adverse health effects from microbial and non-microbial agents occurring in food derived from the animal production process. A PhD studentship is available in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, commencing this autumn 2008. The project is at the heart of a collaboration with leading research institutes in Paris and Prague. The aim of the research is to develop new algorithms for Bayesian filtering using the variational Bayes approximation.

The successful applicant will be a national of any country and have a primary degree with a strong mathematical emphasis. Course credits in statistical signal processing, probability and telecommunications will be desirable, but not essential. The candidate will ideally be available to begin their studies in October 2008, and will spend one month each with collaborating partners in Paris and Prague, in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The studentship will be up to the value of EUR 17,000 per annum, and all university fees will be paid. A travel stipend for the collaborative visits (above) and for conference presentations will also be provided.

The Netherlands Defense Academy and the Delft University of Technology are providing an opportunity of a Ph.D. research assistantship to explore opportunities in the field of Terrain Reference Navigation (TRN) by using digital signal processing techniques that were originally developed for the acquisition and tracking of GPS signals.

The goal of the research is to contribute to the creation of a design framework which can be used to match technology and processing concepts to a particular set of navigation system performance requirements. Job description: Protein folding remains a major unsolved challenge for modern biophysics. Despite the experimental and theoretical efforts of many laboratories in the last 40 years, our understanding of the basic rules that govern the attainment of a protein structure is still incomplete. This lack of information is partly due to the inadequacy of conventional bulk methods to study a process that is highly heterogeneous. During folding, individual molecules are thought to follow different pathways and populate different intermediate structures on their journey to the native state. Such a diversity of behaviors is often blurred in the ensemble average measured by bulk methods.

Recent advances in single molecule manipulation techniques, such as laser tweezers, have made it possible to revisit protein folding with a new approach. In these experiments, individual molecules are directly manipulated and their unfolding and refolding trajectories described along a well-defined reaction coordinate, namely their molecular end-to-end distance. In a work published in Science, Cecconi et al. has recently presented a method to manipulate individual globular proteins using laser tweezers [Cecconi et al., Science 2005; Cecconi et al., European Biophysics Journal 2008]. Using this novel experimental approach, Cecconi et al. investigated the folding pathways of single RNase H molecules with unprecedented details, uncovering information inaccessible to ensemble methods.

At the Department of Physics of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia a new line of research has recently been started that focuses on the study of the folding mechanism of single protein molecules using laser tweezers. Individual molecules are directly manipulated and their response to force characterized in terms of different parameters, such as: i) deformability of the native state, ii) unfolding and refolding pathways, iii) magnitude of the forces that hold together secondary and tertiary structures; iv) anisotropy of the protein's energy landscape, v) distances from the folded and unfolded states to the transition state(s), vi) thermodynamics and kinetics of fluctuations between different molecular conformations. We are therefore seeking a motivated PhD student willing to undertake research in this field. The PhD appointment is for a period of three years. Candidates should have a B.S. or M.S. in physics or related fields.

Temporal Trends in Climate and Grass

A quantitative of temporal trends in climate and grass growth in Ireland towards the development of predictive models of grass growth.

Recent and projected trends in climatic variability brought about by climate change are and will become major factors affecting grass based systems of milk production throughout the world. With a rejuvenation of interest in grazing systems of animal production which has been borne out of consumer perception of environmental, ethical (e.g. animal welfare, genetic manipulation) , and food safety issues (e.g. residues) associated with intensive confinement production systems. With input costs, and in particular those linked to oil, forecast to rise significantly the optimal usage of grass will remain a priority for the competitive advantage of Irish systems to be maintained. A key issue associated with grazing systems is the lack of control over feed quality and availability. While there has been considerable research focused on efficient usage of grass at farm level little attention has been paid to the development of models to accurately predict grass growth to allow management systems to overcome variability of feed supply particularly in light of increased emphasis on global climate change. The objective of this project is to use longitudinal data of grass growth and climatic indicators from a number of weather stations located at various Teagasc sites throughout Ireland to identify and quantify recent trends in grass growth and climatic change and subsequently develop and validate grass growth models based on this accumulated dataset. These newly developed models will be used to determine the projected affect of climate change on grass based dairying systems in Ireland and throughout the world.

The post-graduate work is initially for an M.Sc. with the possibility of extension to a PhD. An honours degree (first class or second class grade 1) in a relevant discipline is essential and training in animal science or animal and crop production is desirable though not essential. In addition the applicant must be computer literate with strong quantitative ability. The applicant should be ambitious, self-motivated and possess an ability for problem solving.

The successful applicant will be funded under the Walsh Fellowship scheme (http://www.teagasc. ie/research/ pgradfellows. htm) and will receive an annual remuneration of €21,000 (prior to deduction of fees). The Institute of Psychiatry (IOP), Kings College London is advertising a 3-year PhD Studentship within the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/SGDP, Section of Developmental Neuropsychology & Neuroimaging, starting in January 2009.

The PhD is funded by the Department of Health via the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Specialist Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Mental Health award to South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and the IOP at KCL, London.

The aim of the project is to study the effects of pharmacological manipulations on functional brain activation in children & adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during disorder relevant cognitive functions. The project is collaborative between the Departments of Child Psychiatry and the Department of Psychological Medicine (Prof Declan Murphy), IOP, King's College London.

The Section of Experimental Psychology and Neuroimaging of Childhood Disorders, headed by Professor Katya Rubia, is part of the Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and is located at the MRC-Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre (SGDP). The Section uses a comprehensive and multimodal approach to elucidate the cognitive, neurocognitive and neurobiological basis of childhood disorders, using neuropychology together with functional, structural and pharmacological magnetic resonance imaging. This project will investigate the comparison between two clinically overlapping, and relatively prevalent childhood disorders, i.e. ADHD and ASD, in their brain activation, brain structure and their neurofunctional response to psychopharmacologic al manipulations. The psychopharmacologic al manipulations will involve Dopamine, Noradrenaline, and Serotonin agonists to elucidate underlying neurotransmitter abnormalities in patients.

The IOP, King's College London achieved a 5* rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the highest possible rating for quality. The Departments of Child Psychiatry/SGDP and Psychological Medicine, have an international reputation for the study of child psychiatry.

Successful candidates will have a first degree in Psychology, Pharmacology, Medicine, or any related Neuroscience area. Relevant experience with statistical data analysis, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, or neuropsychopharmaco logy are desirable.

This project is jointly sponsored by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Sellafield Limited and the University of Central Lancashire. It aims to examine the forecasting and management of skill requirements in the nuclear industry, with initial focus on the decommissioning industry. The project's objectives will be to generate a baseline of knowledge on the theory and practice of skills forecasting and management on very long projects; to document, compare and contrast current skills forecasting practice amongst current site licensing companies in the UK nuclear industry; to develop models of good practice for exploratory discussion and monitored application by each tier of the industry and to propose a model of good practice for adoption by the industry.

The project will involve extensive interaction with senior managers and strategists in the industry and will provide a unique experience for anyone interested in developing a career in the UK nuclear industry. It would suit a graduate with a numerate background and an understanding of organisations, who is enthusiastic to learn about business modelling techniques and the manpower and skill planning which is critical to major projects. This is an outstanding opportunity to join the strategic development team of a fast growing industry and secure a doctoral qualification.

The National Institute of Education, Singapore (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, is
looking for suitable candidates to apply for full-time research scholarships at NIE leading
to the Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) degree. Candidates with research interests in the
humanities, education, sciences and physical education are welcomed to apply. The
scholarship will commence in January 2009.

Criteria

· Candidates should possess a First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) Honours
degree or its equivalent, and a Master's degree in the relevant areas and the ability to
pursue research in the candidate's proposed field of advanced study.

· For international applicants, min scores required: GRE - 1180 (verbal & quantitative) ;

Coverage

· The award is tenable for one year in the first instance and is renewable subject to good

Qualifying Examination and Candidature Confirmation (after 12 months), the stipend may
be increased to S$2,500, subject to good performance in research and required courses.

· Students are expected to cover all their living expenses (including food and lodging) from
this stipend.

· In addition to the monthly stipend, the award also covers the annual tuition fees (S$4,482
to S$11,200 depending on nationality) and the annual computer fees.

any research topic(s) related to the new five (5) interdisciplinary areas (Biotechnology,
Disaster Mitigation, Environment, Natural Resources/Materials, and New/Renewable
Energy).

Although studying outside ASEAN countries, students under the Doctoral Degree Program in
Japan are encouraged to participate in AUN/SEED-Net’s network activities (e.g.
AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference, Collaborative Research activities, etc.) so as to create,
maintain, and deepen the linkage with Member Institutions (student’s sending institution and/or
student’s hosting institution when pursued master’s degree).

Qualifications
(1) Applicants must have a research-based master’s degree in relevant engineering field or to be
awarded the master’s degree before starting doctoral degree study.
(2) Applicants should be ranked within top 10% of the class for Bachelor’s Degree, in principle,
(a certified document of class rank is required).
(3) Applicant should have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3 or more in the 4-scale grading
system or at least 7.5 in the 10-scale grading system, with some English competency.
(4) Applicants must be outstanding graduates of Master’s Degree Program of AUN/SEED-Net
Project, or outstanding young teaching staff or research staff of Member Institutions, who are
strongly motivated to have a professional career as teaching staff at Member Institutions.
(5) Applicants, in principle, should have at least one recent (not older than 2 years) research
publication in refereed national or international journal.
(6) Applicants must be under the age of 35 at the time of enrollment and capable of carrying out independent research.

The duration of the scholarship is strictly three years.
Coverage of the Scholarships: Tuition fees, living expenses, health insurance, and a round-trip air ticket will be provided as per JICA regulations.

The applicants for the Doctoral Degree Program in Japan submit the AUN/SEED-Net’s Application Form for Scholarship along with other required documents (please refer to Application Form of the Doctoral Degree Program in Japan 2009, Item No. 12-13) to the contact person
of the Member Institutions to which the applicants belong (sending institutions). (List of
contact person at each Member Institution is given in Attachment 3.) Please note that at this
stage there is no need to submit application form of Japanese Supporting Universities.
(2) The contact person of each sending institution sends a collection of Application Forms
endorsed by the Member Institution to the AUN/SEED-Net Project. Please note that
individual application sent to AUN/SEED-Net Project will not be accepted. However,
Sending Institutions could submit the collection of application forms more than once towards
the Deadline.
(In case of applicants studying overseas, Application Forms as well as other required
documents can be submitted directly to AUN/SEED-Net, provided that the applicants request
the contact person of their respective Sending Institution to submit an endorsement letter to
AUN/SEED-Net.)
(3) The AUN/SEED-Net Project will check all required documents and request missing
documents from applicants through Sending Institutions, if necessary.
(4) The AUN/SEED-Net Project will conduct initial screening and send the results to applicants’
sending institutions. At the same time, the AUN/SEED-Net Project will consult with
concerned Japanese Supporting Universities for possibility of accepting the applicant in the
event that the applicant is awarded a scholarship and passes the entrance examination.
*Applicants are encouraged to contact by themselves a prospective advisor of your
preference at a Japanese Supporting University for consent on acceptance in the event the
applicant is awarded a scholarship and passes the entrance examination. It will be an
advantage in the screening process if the applicant can obtain and enclose such consent letter
(or copy of e-mail communication) from a prospective advisor in this application as it can
fasten the screening process.
(5) After the communication with Japanese Supporting Universities, the AUN/SEED-Net
Project prioritizes the applicants and sends the result to JICA Headquarters. JICA
Headquarters then make the decision on the selection of the successful applicants by April
2009.
(6) The AUN/SEED-Net Project informs the results to the Member Institutions to which the
applicants belong in April 2009, and provides the scholarship awardees with the respective
Japanese Supporting Universities’ Application Forms.
(7) The process after sending the Japanese Supporting Universities’ Application Forms may be
different from country to country. AUN/SEED-Net, in cooperation with the JICA Local
Office in the respective countries, will advise the scholarship awardees on the necessary
procedures.

Submission Deadlines of the Application Form
Applications for the Doctoral Degree Program in Japan should be submitted both in soft copy
and in printed form, by October 31 (Fri), 2008 to the AUN/SEED-Net Project. They must be
signed by the Dean or the Representative of the AUN/SEED-Net Member Institution to which
the applicants originally belong.

Google has published information from Google Europe Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship 2009, which aims to promote women to results in the field of computers and technology as well as active role models and leaders. Scholarships are open to students that his last year bachelor’s degree or enrolled in master’s or doctoral degree (or equivalent) in 2009/2010.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background and demonstrated leadership. A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients, selected from the finalists, will each receive a €5,000 (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2009/2010 academic year.
In June 2009, all finalists will be invited to visit Google’s European Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. Job description
The Ph.D. student is expected to do research leading to a Ph.D. thesis in the project "Surfing the information waves: Finding, revealing, and evaluating information online". At the core of this project lies the question how people deal with the reliability of information on the Internet, to what extent the formal and informal mechanisms that facilitate reliable exchange of information offline have online equivalents, and to what extent new online mechanisms and tools are and
can be developed to facilitate reliable information exchange.

Typical questions of interest are: How do people discern useful and reliable information from useless and unreliable information in online settings? How can users be motivated to provide reliable information and how can the provision of unreliable information be minimized? To what
extent do the answers to these questions depend on the kind of online setting? For the project we anticipate doing research in several areas of application, such as medical information sites and groups, social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Xing, etc), and general economic and consumer sites, such as eBay, Amazon.

Requirements
The candidate should have a Masters degree (or equivalent) in the social sciences (sociology, psychology, political or communication science), excellent knowledge and skills in quantitative methods of data analysis, and familiarity with new forms of online communication. Most of all, we
are looking for someone with a natural curiosity with respect to online interaction of any kind. Knowledge about theories pertaining to the topicin (social) psychology or sociology would be an additional asset. The candidate should be proficient in English (speaking and writing).

Conditions of employment

Any area of social science study will be considered, however the strengthening of current strategic areas of importance and critical mass in research suggests the following are most likely to meet with support:

Any combination of underpinning social science disciplines would be acceptable, however we have the strongest supervisory standing in sociology, social policy, psychology and philosophy. PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience of motor control and coordination-Bangor

Applications are invited for a 3-yr PhD studentship, funded by School of Psychology,
Bangor University (UK), and supervised by Dr Jörn Diedrichsen. The studentship is available
from earliest October 1st, 2008 (start date flexible). Applications are accepted until the
Position is filled, the review of Applications is starting on September 13th. The
studentship is funded at ESRC rates, currently GBP12,940 per year.

The student will join the laboratory for Human Motor Control Lab, Bangor. Work in the
laboratory focuses on the computational principles and neural underpinnings of human
motor control, especially in the areas of bimanual coordination and function of the
cerebellum. In behavioral studies we use robotic devices to simulate novel objects and new
dynamic environments, and study how healthy participants learn and perform novel tasks.
We develop computational models of coordination to understand the problems the brain
solves as we interact with the environment. Neural underpinnings of these processes are
studied using fMRI in which subjects perform or learn well-controlled motor tasks using
fMRI-compatible robotic devices. Finally, studies with patients with lesions in the
cerebellum allow us to test specific hypotheses about the functional role of the
cerebellum. The PhD project will consist of an associated but independent series of studies
related to this work.

The Studentship will be undertaken within the School of Psychology, which was given the
top rating of 5*A in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. The School houses a
3T MRI scanner, and a number of robotic and eye tracking devices (also fMRI-compatible)
to record and manipulate movements. The School offers a thriving research and learning

Political Systems and Institutional Change

The courses will especially focus on the historical, political, institutional and economic dynamics that
have been characterising the development of European and ex Soviet countries after the Second Word War. They will then consider among other topics: the institutional and decisional dynamics of European countries and the European Union including the trends towards multilevel governance both at the European and at the domestic level (federalisation, independent regulatory authorities, etc.); transatlantic relations EU-US; relations between politics, social
processes and political economy decisions; paths of economic and political development; the institutional workings of international organisations; the characters of some geographical areas of special relevance.

Duration: 3 years

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign PhD students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

Tuition Exemptions :PhD students are exempt from tuition and fees. Annual Scholarship: Annual scholarship amount is +/- 13.638,00 Euros gross, corresponding to +/- 2.270,00 Euros gross paid every two months. Scholarships are awarded for three years and are confirmed yearly.

A few scholarships in the area of mathematics, geometry and computer
graphics are available. They are a part of the *NRF*

Rendering in Co-Space". The work
will be carried out at the Centre for Advance Media Technologies (CAMTech)
of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The goal of the project is
to propose an efficient interoperable mathematical model defining geometry,
visual appearance and tangible physical properties of objects in

The object definitions must be small in size and invariant to the rendering
platform used in Co-Space. The particular goals of the project include
development of the fast interactive definitions by implicit and explicit
functions, description of complex geometry using parametric partial
differential equations, introduction of function-defined physical properties
to objects in Co-Space, and development of several exemplar applications
illustrating the usefulness of the proposed approach, including an ability
to establish physical contact with other party in Co-Space through haptic
devices.

*A good bachelor or master degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science,
Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mathematics or related-fields.
Advance knowledge of mathematics, geometry, physics and good programming
skills. Evidence of the experience will be required.
Knowledge of one or more of the following areas will be an advantage: 3D
computer graphics, interactive computer graphics, web visualization, web
programming, parallel computing.

Objectives and description:

Among the various branches of physical oceanography, coastal physicaloceanography is one of the richest and most complex. It is also the area most likely to have a direct impact on society through issues such as coastal pollution, water quality, oils slick drift, sea level rise, coastal erosion. It also has a direct impact on fish stock management, maritime traffic monitoring and water sports events organisation. In the last decade, high resolution ocean modelling has become a core tools to answer the needs of these various fields. However, model forecasts have to be corrected by satellite and in situ data, routinely available in the coastal environment. This correction is applied through data assimilation methods. The POC/LEGOS team is one of the few scientific groups to use tackle data assimilation in the coastal environment.

The proposed work follows up on Matthieu Le Hénaff (LEGOS 2008) thesis which dealt with a 3D coastal model of the Bay of Biscay. This thesisaim was to determine how an observational network could detect the degrees of freedom in numerical models and how it could forces the error modes in order to improve the forecast. To this end stochastic modelling was used on the POC pc cluster. It is considered crucial in this new thesis to carry one with this approach. Indeed, the results are a useful only if the model is reasonably good and if the origins of model errors
have been identified.

The proposed thesis aims to develop a positive feedback between model error analysis and the optimisation of the observational network. Novel statistical method will be used. These will focus on the events probability rather than their intensity or their phase. Particular attention will be paid to new observational tools such as SWOT altimetry, coastal radars, gliders, on top of existing data.

Work Plan

Over the duration of the PhD, several aspects of coastal oceanography will be investigated:

1) Regional Modelling:

The geographic area is centred on the Islands of Sulawesi and Borneo and could extend from 11°E to 126°E, and from 8°S to 8°N.It includes the Java Sea, the straits of Makassar, Lombok and Flores as well as the Celebes Sea and could potentially also include part of the South China
Sea.. The Seas of Banda and Molucca would not be included. This would simplify the prescription of boundary conditions. The resolution of the grid would be 1/12°. If needed and if possible, a higher resolution could be implemented. The model domain would be nested in a regional or
global 1/4° model configuration. Special care will be taken to make best use of recent work by the INSTANT community and by the LOCEAN and LEGOS laboratories on the region.

2) Model error analysis:

The aim is to determine model error by comparing output from a long hindcast to past observations. To this end, the structure of theregional model ensemble representers will be studied. These representers will be characterised in terms of physical processes (eddies, coastal
waves, monsoon response).

3) New statistical methods:

Estimation theory is usually conducted in a Gaussian universe. This is not suited to the existence of extreme events (in terms of intensity) or the presence of remarkable one (in terms of frequency). As a result, Continuous Ranked Probability Score (Hersbach, 2000) will be used to
determine a model short term forecast ability. This is equivalent to investigating the coherence of errors between model forecast and observations. A physical interpretation of remarkable events will also be conducted.

4) Impact of new observations on the model:

The aim is to determine what impact new sets of observations would have on the observation of remarkable events in the region. To this end, the RMS method (Le Hénaff et al., 2008) will be applied to modelled observations or existing ones. If an analysis method is available, the
impact on forecast will be tested.

Coastal Radar observations are routinely conducted in Oregon. The candidate might be required to spend some time in Oregon in order to improve his understanding of the technology behind coastal radars data and their assimilation into models.

Introduction of the Research topic/ background (300 words)
In the past decades the RCT has been viewed as the paradigm study design to determine the intended effects of drug interventions. In addition RCTs are important to assess type (i.e. more common, predictable) unintended effects of drugs. Typically these RCTs are executed in three phases during a period of 10 years prior to drug registration.
Currently, trials are not designed, conducted and analysed in the most efficient and expeditious manner and several improvements in the design, conduct and analysis phase could lead to increased efficiency.
For example, prevention of losses to follow-up and incomplete data, and sophisticated methods to impute missing values if they occur can increase the effective sample size. Sophisticated methods to indicate when there is enough information to stop the trial can shorten the duration of the trial and decrease the number of patients to be included. By using information of earlier trials when analysing a new trial, evidence of efficacy of a drug might be available earlier and less trials have to be performed.

Research Questions (200 words)
How can the design, conduct and analysis of randomized controlled trials on drug effects be improved?

Improvements in design phase:
Review of the literature summarizing different strategies to select
patient populations, to perform sample size estimations and to conduct
randomisation and blinding, and analysing which of these different
strategies are most effective. This review can then be used to
formulate a recommendation on designing RCTs.
Comparison of existing and development of new statistical methods to
analyze composite endpoints using empirical data.
Improvements in conduct phase:
Review of the literature on different strategies to recruit and
follow-up study participants and summarizing different strategies to
improve and monitor compliance. This information is used to analyse
which strategies are most effective and to formulate a recommendation
on improving conduct of RCTs.
Comparison of different methods and strategies, for example
conventional and Bayesian analyses, to stop trials early, using
empirical data of already performed trials.
Improvements in analysis phase:
Comparison of different imputation methods of increasing complexity
for random and non-random missing values due to 'lost-to-follow- up'
and incomplete collection of data. Empirical data of trials will be
used to compare these different methods.
Comparison and application of different meta-analytical (Bayesian)
techniques to analyse data of a trial using data from previously
performed trials. Comparison and application of different
meta-analytical (Bayesian) techniques to pool phase III and IV
studies.

Research focuses on the biology and biodiversity of macroalgae and planktonic algae, the ecology of soft bottom sediments and pelagic ecology. Marine research is also carried out within the other research programs at the department and at CEES.

We are seeking a person with expertise and research profile in field-based ecological research on zooplankton or fish. The appointed candidate should strengthen, and complement the research that is already carried out at the department and establish a field-based activity in marine pelagic ecology, alternatively in combination with experimental studies. It is expected that the appointed candidate will aim at acquiring external funding to subsidise his/her research. A doctoral degree, strong publication record, and teaching experience are required.

The person appointed must be able and willing to participate in teaching, supervision and examination in marine biology at all levels (bachelor, master, PhD), as well as teaching more general undergraduate courses. Research area: Systems Biology - Life Sciences
Systems biological methods shall be used to investigate the systemic properties of inflammatory signalling networks in mammalian cells. Inflammation is a fundamental response of virtually all multi-cellular organisms to infection and injury. It is led on by a variety of signal transduction pathways tightly regulated and linked to other cellular events like apoptosis and proliferation. Strict regulation of this process is essential as errors can result in clinically relevant disorders like infection and sepsis, atherosclerotic disease and others. The large number of participating components, their dependencies and multiple stimuli make the analysis of this signalling network difficult. Therefore a Boolean (logical) model of inflammatory signal transduction pathways shall be developed based on the current published knowledge and own experimental data aiming at a holistic (systems oriented) view. One focus will be on regulatory interactions between network components under different input-output settings and prediction of signalling scenarios in knock-out experiments. The project aims at the prediction and verification of experimental data, the examination of the structure and hierarchy of the inflammation signalling networks and the relevance analysis of the contained components.

The PhDposition we currently offer is planned for research topics of area P. As a PhD student in a leading research institute integrated in the ETH Zurich, you will conduct academic and policy-relevant economic research in an inspiring environment.

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Professor Hans Gersbach and other members of the faculty. Good writing skills and computing skills are essential. The main focus of the position will be on conceptual and theoretical research. The appointment includes opportunities for teaching related to the candidate's field of interest. Fluent knowledge of English is mandatory. Master degrees in mathematics, physics or engineering sciences are welcome.

The appointment includes the opportunity to write a dissertation in the candidate's field of interest. A PhD thesis is to be completed within three to four years. The salary will be in accordance with the regulations of the ETH Zurich.
