Quality of Life and Travel Complexity in the Changing Urban Environment (In collaboration with MRC-McLean Hazel Ltd, an Edinburgh-based transport consultancy)
This PhD studentship will use complex secondary datasets to explore how travel patterns and behaviour (including commuting and other trips) have changed over time in urban Britain. The project will study the effect of demographic restructuring, including the growth of more single person households, on travel patterns, as well as geographical variations in travel behaviour between cities, towns and rural areas in Britain. Of particular interest will be the links between travel behaviour and quality of life, including health, housing, social inclusion and general well-being. It is hypothesised that because of demographic and societal restructuring travel behaviour is becoming more complex, and transport policy therefore much more interdependent with a range of urban policy areas. By unpacking the explicit links between transport and other aspects of quality of urban life, more efficacious urban policies can be defined, implemented and evaluated.
[University Supervisors: Paul Boyle and Maarten van Ham]
The successful applicant will join the School's Population, Health and Welfare Research Group, and will also play an active role in the ESRC-funded Longitudinal Studies Centre – Scotland and the ESRC-funded Centre for Population Change. Experimental Linguistics: Post Doc, University of Lisbon/Center of Linguistics, Portugal
University or Organization: University of Lisbon/Center of Linguistics
Job Location: Lisbon, Portugal
Web Address: http://www.clul. ul.pt/
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonology; Psycholinguistics; Syntax; Experimental Linguistics
Description:
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon is broadly based, interdisciplinary and internationally oriented. The faculty offers courses and conducts research in languages and cultures of Western, Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, history, archaeology, art history, performative and visual arts, literature, philosophy, communication, translation and media studies, as well as African and Asian studies.
Graduate courses are strongly interweaved with research centres, and graduate students amount to one third of the Faculty students. The Centre of Linguistics (CLUL) is committed to theoretical, theoretically oriented, descriptive and experimental research leading to novel (gap-filling) contributions to linguistic analysis, targeting both adult and child grammars, as well as language processing. Presently, the Centre includes a Psycholinguists Lab and a Phonetics Lab, and several lines of research within Experimental Linguistics are being developed. In particular, the integration of research in theoretical and experimental linguistics is a central objective for present and future research, which necessarily calls for the strengthening of the research team in the area of Experimental Linguistics. This strengthening is crucial to several developing lines of research and research projects, namely within speech and language processing and the interface between syntax, phonology and language processing. Among the research questions being pursued, we highlight the following: the role of frequency and grammar in online lexical access/word detection; implicit prosody, syntax and language processing; early language development (word segmentation, phonology, syntax) approached namely via perception studies with infants and babies.
CLUL thus offers a postdoc position in Experimental Linguistics. The researcher will set up and test hypotheses addressing the questions mentioned above, among others of interest to the research team.
Experimental methods may include word spotting, lexical decision, eye-tracking, distributional learning, head-turn preference procedure.
Another important aim is the development and advancement of experimental techniques to be used in current lines of research and new projects. The researcher will be actively collaborating with current research projects, and involved in the supervision of Masters and PhD students, as well as in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of research data. It is also expected that the researcher will set up a project in the areas of interest just described, thus contributing to the central objectives of the team.
Applicants should have a strong commitment to internationally- recognized research and demonstrated capacities as an independent researcher, especially in the form of journal publications. The successful candidate should have a background in an experimental linguistic discipline, such as psycholinguistics, speech perception, language development, or experimental phonology. Some knowledge of Portuguese is desirable, but not required.
Applications should include (i) a letter of motivation, (ii) a curriculum vitae, (iii) copies of degree certificates, (iv) copy of an identification document, and (v) a minimum of two letters of recommendation or two contacts of qualified specialists who may recommend the candidate. Please send two publications plus PhD dissertation.
E-mail applications should be sent in PDF, DOC or RTF format, and should specify the candidate's name and the job reference number in the message as well as in the subject field.

Graduate courses are strongly interweaved with research centres, and graduate students amount to one third of the Faculty students. The Centre of Linguistics (CLUL) is committed to theoretical, theoretically oriented, descriptive and experimental research leading to novel (gap-filling) contributions to linguistic analysis, as well to making available to the scientific community new language resources such as corpora, databases and tools that may significantly contribute to linguistic and multidisciplinary research. Understanding language variation has been a long-standing objective within CLUL. However, the study of language variation has only very recently targeted prosodic variation, both within CLUL and elsewhere.
The inspection of the prosodic properties of local varieties of European Portuguese is thus largely to be done. Therefore, questions like how the organization of speech into chunks varies across Portugal, what intonation patterns are used in the different regions, or whether speech rhythm contributes to regional varieties remain to be answered. Research on prosodic variation is of central interest to language typologies, to grammatical studies (syntax-prosody and morphology-prosody interfaces), to speech and language processing, to language development, to language pathology, or to speech technologies. CLUL is engaged in developing this area of research, by addressing prosodic variation within a program of international scope that proposes a system for prosodic transcription and labeling of speech corpora, together with a set of methodological procedures that enable cross-linguistic work on prosodic variation in language.
CLUL offers a postdoc position in Phonology, Phonetics and Language Variation. The researcher will set up a project conducing to an Interactive Atlas of European Portuguese Prosody and Intonation, freely accessed online. Data collection for prosody and intonation survey will follow the procedures established in recent similar projects for other European languages (such as British English or Catalan). Data processing will make available new resources for further in-depth studies of Portuguese prosody and related applications. The researcher will be actively collaborating with the members of the research team committed to the study of prosody, and involved in the supervision of Masters and PhD students.
Applicants should have a strong commitment to internationally- recognized research and demonstrated capacities as an independent researcher, especially in the form of journal publications. The successful candidate should have a background in the phonetics and phonology of prosody. Experience with tonal labeling (ToBI) is welcome. Some knowledge of Portuguese is desirable, but not required.

we would like to invite to apply for an open PhD position at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. The ideal applicant would have experience in fMRI/MRI data evaluation (e.g. with *SPM*) and also knowledge in working with *Matlab*.
The focus of our multi-disciplinary research group is on translational approaches to investigate the neural correlates of cognitive and behavioral dysfunctions in neurodegenerative disorders by applying voxel-based morphometry (VBM). More specifically, we want to use clinical (comprehensive neuropsychological) data from a large patient group of the Day Clinic of Cognitive Neurology at the University of Leipzig and relate it to atrophy and decreases in glucose utilization (as measured by MRI and FDG-PET). The main focus of the project is placing dementia in a framework of cognitive neuroscience. Findings might be embedded into future behavioral and/or functional imaging studies.
Candidates with a background in medicine, psychology or a related field should be interested in clinical neuroscience, neuroplasticity, as well as in higher cognitive function and brain imaging. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and have a strong interest in this exciting research area.
A background in MRI analysis techniques (SPM, Matlab etc.) and good statistical skills would be of advantage. The Max Planck Institute in Leipzig offers an excellent multi-disciplinary and interactive research environment with access to excellent research facilities (3T and 7T research MRI scanners, MEG, EEG, NIRS and TMS devices). The candidate will profit from the neuropsychological expertise of the Day Clinic of Cognitive Neurology that is tightly affiliated to the Max Planck Institute. The position is funded for maximally 3 years from now and will be held open until suitable candidates have been found.

PhD positions available at UNESCO-IHE in collaboration with Makerere University and the Kampala City Council in Uganda
An interdisciplinary research program entitled "*Integrated approaches and strategies to address the Sanitation Crisis in Unsewered Slum Areas in African mega-cities (SCUSA)*", funded by the UNESCO-IHE Partnership Research Fund (UPaRF), will be carried out by UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (Delft, The Netherlands) , Makerere University, and the Kampala City Council, both in Uganda.
The SCUSA research program addresses one of the most relevant developmental issues worldwide: a reduction of under-5 child mortality rates due to water-borne diseases, and malnutrition in low-income unplanned urban settlements. As such, the project will contribute to the realization of Millenium Development Goal 7, Target 10 (i.e. to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water). The SCUSA research program has identified three projects, centered around a slum area of Kampala. To carry out these research projects, three strongly interdisciplinary PhD positions are vacant.
Project description
The development and expansion of informal settlements in the peri-urban areas of African cities is widespread, while these cities harbour the majority of the urban population. Peri-urban areas, or slums, are characterized by, among other things, poorly constructed houses, poor water supply and sanitary conditions, and lack or inadequate support services.
Besides the spreading of diseases related to surface water (e.g. malaria), one of the main problems associated with sanitation and water in peri-urban areas is related to the pollutant load entering and leaving the peri-urban catchment, either as surface water or groundwater. This water is polluting drinking water (with increased incidence of cholera and diarrhoea) or eutrophying surface water, due to extremely high nutrient fluxes discharged from the surrounding catchments. As a result, the main research question of the SCUSA research program is: *How to improve sanitation in peri-urban urban slum areas?*
Ph.D. project
1: Wastewater and solid waste treatment and reusePh.D. project
2: The socio-economic aspects of improving sanitation Ph.D. project
3: Hydrology and contaminant transport
*The following applies to all 3 Ph.D. positions:*
- All topics will be carried out in a so-called sandwich construction with different phases at UNESCO-IHE in the Netherlands and field research in Uganda (with regular contacts with Ugandan and Dutch supervisors) .
- PhD positions are funded with a fellowship for which NUFFIC regulations apply.
- Starting date: January 1, 2009, for 4 years.
- Qualifications: MSc degree (average mark: 80% or above) in a discipline relevant to the topic, e.g. environmental engineering, sanitation, socio-economics of the water sector, water resource economics, hydrology and water resources.
- The applicant must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in conducting interdisciplinary research.
- The applicant must be willing to do research in a team, share his results with the SCUSA research team and advise fellow Ph.D. researchers when necessary.
- The applicant should be willing to co-supervise MSc research projects.
- The applicant must be fluent in English (e.g. TOEFL paper based score of at least 550).
- Excellent reporting skills and shown ability to publish in the scientific literature.
- Knowledge of the African sanitation field is desirable.
- Age: 40 years and below.
For questions, please mail Prof. Dr. Frank Kansiime ( fkansiime@muienr. mak.ac.ug) or Dr. Jan Willem Foppen of UNESCO-IHE ( j.foppen@unesco- ihe.org).
Applications, including curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and 2 letters of recommendation, as well as the names and contact details of three contactable referees, all in one pdf file, should be sent by email to t.morgenstond@ unesco-ihe. org before *September 1st 2008*.
Please mention in the subject heading "PhD application SCUSA project *x*", where *x* refers to the Ph.D. projects mentioned above. Short-listed candidates will be contacted before October 1st 2008 to set a date of an interview, possibly via video-conferencing.

Post-Doc Position: Center for Tropical Marine Ecology
Deadline: 25 August, 2008
The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), an associate member of the Leibniz Society, addresses ecological and socio-economic issues related to the sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs and sea grass beds. Research and teaching at the Center are devoted to the structure and functions of these ecosystems, their resources and their vulnerability to human interventions and natural changes. The research is conducted within interdisciplinary partnership projects with institutions and universities in the tropics.
The social-ecological systems (SES) analysis group at the ZMT investigates human-nature relations. Participatory approaches to the generation of social-ecological system understanding and to the identification of ways to steer coastal change into more desirable directions are major foci. The SES group operates a research programme in three coastal regions of Indonesia (SPICE Cluster 6). We are now looking for a social or natural scientist with a strong interdisciplinary research orientation. The post is embedded in the two key research themes of SPICE Cluster 6 (Social-ecological systems analysis and Governance). The research under this post should provide new insights on the potentials of alternative livelihood options (e.g. marine polyculture) as socially, economically and ecologically sustainable income sources for Indonesian coastal communities. A focus on innovations is encouraged. The field focus of this post is in the Spermonde Coral Archipelago but the research should provide results of wider relevance.
The position is at the level of E13 and initially funded from 1.10 2008 until 30.8 2010. Further work is envisaged. The ZMT is interested in increasing the number of women in the field of science and encourages qualified women to apply. Given similar levels of qualification, physically handicapped applicants will be given preference. Interviews will be held in the period August 28 th until September 5th .
Please apply by e-mail (CV with current address and phone number, statement of interest, work proposal of 2-4 pages and names of two referees) by August 25th to zmtsekr@zmt- bremen.de.
Deadline: 25 August, 2008

For nearly fifty years, the Rockefeller Foundation has hosted scholars, creative artists, and practitioners at Bellagio for concentrated work on major projects. Talented professionals use time at Bellagio to advance work that has impact across disciplines, while interacting daily with an active and diverse intellectual community. Artists and scholars stay for one month of work at Bellagio, away from their usual daily demands, and flexible schedules are available for practitioners working at non-profit or NGO organizations. .
Residents at the Bellagio Center in 2007-2008 represent a diverse group of more than 20 countries, including: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Macedonia, Poland, Russia, the United Kingdom, Israel, Lebanon, Canada, the United States, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Togo. Applicants from outside the United States and Western Europe are particularly encouraged to apply, as are individuals working on projects aligned with the Foundation's objective to expand opportunities for poor or vulnerable people. The Bellagio residency provides room/board and high-speed internet access to all residents free of charge. Please note that financial assistance can be made available to successful applicants whose limited means might otherwise prevent them from accepting a residency.
The selection process for Bellagio is very competitive, and will ultimately favor professionals with significant experience and strong project proposals. The Bellagio opportunity is not a grant, but rather a time to interact with a professional community while working toward tangible personal achievement.

Post Doc in adaptive biosensor-based assistance module, Uni Bremen, Germany
http://www.stellen.uni-bremen.de/a111-08.php3
*Research Assistant/*
* Postdoctoral Researcher
*in the EU-funded project
*SHARE-it: Supported Human Autonomy for Recovery and Enhancement of Cognitive and Motor Abilities Using Information Technologies*
(TV-L 13, approx. € 35,000 to € 50,000 p.a. gross)
The position is available from 01 August 2008 until 31 December 2009 (extension is possible) and are under condition of job release.
The goal of the project SHARE-it is to develop a scalable, adaptive system of add-ons to sensor and assistive technology so that they can be modularly integrated into an intelligent home environment to enhance the individual's autonomy. The system will be designed to inform and assist the user and his/her caregivers through monitoring and mobility help. Thus, we plan to contribute to the development of the next generation of assistive devices for older persons or people with disabilities so that they can be self-dependent as long as possible. We focus on add-ons to be compatible with existing technologies and to achieve an easier integration into existing systems. We also aim at adaptive systems as transparent, and consequently, easy to use to the person as possible. Scalability is meant to include or remove devices from the system in a simple, intuitive way. The focus is the development of an adaptive biosensor-based module that measures biometric data, learn to classify them in order to conclude about changes in affectives states like stress.
*Biosensor-based assistance module *
The applicant will develop an adaptive biosensor-based assistance module. First typical cognitive, sensory, and motor deficits in a target population have to be assessed and have to be represented in a knowledge base. Second online information will be received from a biosensor module sensitive to the emotional and attentive states of the user. Based on both types of information a profile of the user will be generated, continuously updated and used for the adaptive user support. A platform for this assistance module will be an intelligent walker and an autonomous wheelchair developed in SHARE-it. Practical experience in a number of the following areas is desired:
- software design and development
- signal processing
- multi-sensor user activity profiles/ multisensory information processing
- processing of biometrical and physiological data
- knowledge-based systems and uncertainty management
Additional knowledge that would be appreciated:
- interdisciplinary background
- experience with international research projects
- interest in psychological/medical applications
The successful applicant of the position is expected to autonomously communicate and interact with the European cooperation partners that jointly develop the SHARE-it modules and platforms. The requisites for the position is a graduation in a relevant area or a master / diploma in computer science as well as interest in basic and applied research, and/or experience in a similar project field.
