QUT's School of Economics and Finance is seeking three PhD students to undertake study in the areas of behavioural economics and applied microeconometrics.
The scholarships are attached to a large international research group sponsored by the Australian Research Council, AusAid, the World Bank, the Ford Foundation and the German Labour Institute (IZA) as well as an international collaboration with European companies.
The successful applicants will work with researchers from the Australian National University and the QUT-based National Centre for Econometric Research.
They will be expected to follow standard economic PhD coursework in all fields of economics and to engage in a variety of analyses, such as handling large-scale data sets on migration in China, performing economic experiments in Australia with and without measuring heart rates, or developing a theoretical view of human decision making (including migration, network formation and attitudes towards risk and collaboration) .

* At least an Honours 2A or international equivalent thereof in economics or closely related subfield.
* Good verbal and written English language skills.
* A proven high ability in the use of analytical methods, as witnessed by courses in statistics/ economic modelling/game theory/mathematics, or else prior work of a high analytical quality.
* The ability to work with world-class researchers from many different countries (Australia, the United States, England, China, Indonesia, Germany) and the desire to become a research-oriented economist.
The scholarships
The school is offering three full-time scholarships to the value of $26,140 per annum (tax exempt and indexed annually) for three years. Top up scholarships and/or Research Assistant work may be available. The successful applicants will be based in Brisbane.

Applications are invited for two energetic Postdoctoral Researchers to join the NSW Systems Biology Initiative within the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.
The positions are part of the NSW Systems Biology Initiative (SBI), an exciting new initiative commenced in 2008 with $1M foundation funding. The SBI undertakes basic and applied bioinformatics research in proteomics, genomics and systems biology and is funded to also engage in collaborative projects with other groups in these areas. Collaborative projects are in association with users of the major -omics facilities in NSW including the Ramaciotti Centre for Gene Function Analysis, the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility, the UNSW Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Facility and the Southern Cross University Centre for Plant Conservation Genetics.
The successful applicants will have a PhD or relevant experience in bioinformatics for genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics or systems biology and will work with Professor Marc Wilkins and other members of the SBI team.
These are one year appointments, extendable for up to 4 years.

Starting on and after 26 April 2008, people coming to Australia to study on a student visa will automatically be granted permission to work. Permission to work will also apply to eligible family members that will stay with the foreign student in Australia.
The new rule will save time and money, as foreign students are no longer required to apply to work separately once they arrive in Australia.
Current work rights accorded foreign students will not change. Students will not be allowed to work until their studies have started and can only work up to 20 hours per week while their studies are in session (excluding any work that is a registered part of their course of study or training). During scheduled course breaks, students can work as much as they want.
Family members of the student will also not be allowed to work until the student's course has started and will only be allowed to work 20 hours per week -- unless the student is taking a Master's or doctorates course. Family members of Masters and doctoral students can work unlimited hours.
Student visa application charges will also change to take into account the new work privileges. Currently, students who wish to work are required to pay a student visa application charge of AUD $430, plus an additional AUD $60 for permission to work. On and after 26 April 2008, a single fee of $450 will be charged for the visa and permission to work.
Students who work in Australia gain valuable experience and contacts, giving them a head start on a more permanent visa if they wish to stay.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) - Japan Scholarship Programme (JSP) was established in April 1988 with funding from the Government of Japan. Ph.D. Scholarships available: Effects of physical disturbances on ecological communities
Two Ph.D. scholarships are available in the Department of Biological Sciences at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia) for research exploring the role of physical disturbances in structuring ecological communities. The scholarships are available to both Australian and international students. Students will be supervised by Dr. Josh Madin, whose research focuses in large part on modelling the effects of hydrodynamic disturbances (e.g., cyclones) on the biological and physical structure of coral reef communities. Students will not be limited to working within coral reef systems, but rather will be encouraged to address related questions in coral reefs and/or other ecological systems. The students will be joining a research group that uses data from many scientific fields in order to tackle broader- scale questions. Therefore, students will also be encouraged to work on novel informatics techniques to aid in large-scale data integration and analysis.
It is anticipated that students will conduct fieldwork and explore modelling approaches in pursuit of their research questions. For this reason, field experience and strong quantitative skills (including mathematical modelling, computer programming, and statistics) are desirable. Social Inclusion PhD Scholarship (MQRES)

The Centre for Research on Social Inclusion (CRSI) is offering two
scholarships for PhD research projects focused on religion and social
inclusion. Candidates may approach the topic through considering the
relationship between religion and political philosophy or religion and
political movements. Areas could include (but are not limited to)
religion and citizenship; the relationship between religious and other
kinds of discrimination; religion as a source of resistance to change,
or resistance to the status quo.
The Centre for Research on Social Inclusion is an interdisciplinary
group of researchers from disciplines such as Anthropology, Sociology,
Philosophy, Cultural Studies, and Human Geography. We also include
members from across the university from areas such as demography and
finance. The Centre undertakes social, cultural and philosophical
research into contemporary social justice issues.
Within the broad rubric of social and cultural inclusion, the Centre
has five areas of special research strength:

This scholarship is available to domestic or international students.
Applicants should have equivalent research qualifications to an
Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours, such as a
Masters degree with a substantial thesis component in a relevant
discipline.
The scholarship pays a living allowance, currently $20,007 per annum,
tax exempt (2008), and the maximum tenure is 3.5 years full time,
subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the
tenure of the scholarship.

A PhD scholarship investigating the physiological ecology of forest succession is available at Macquarie University. The successful applicant will work in conjunction with an ARC Discovery Project headed by Dr. Chris Lusk, in the Department of Biological Sciences. Work will focus on understanding traits associated with adaptation of juvenile plants to different light environments, and there is ample scope for the student's own input into project design.

There are numerous domains in which the theory of recognition (especially the work of Axel Honneth) might be applied to better understand the experience of minority communities in Australia. These might include, for example, the experience of Muslim populations in Australian cities, or the contemporary working and life conditions among migrant workers.
The Centre for Research on Social Inclusion seeks expressions of interests from students wishing to explore the applicability of recognition theory in relation to migrant communities in Australia through a case study to be developed in discussion with the supervisory team and the student.

ICS MQRES Lab-on-a-chip Microbiology PhD

A full-time PhD Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships (MQRES) is currently available in the Division of Information and Communication Sciences for a project in experimental lab-on-a-chip devices in the department of physics. The successful candidate will undertake PhD research on design and fabrication of novel microfluidic devices for microbiology.
The field of microfluidics concerns itself with a wide variety of interdisciplinary topics including fundamental questions in biology chemistry and physics. This project will involve the design and fabrication of microfluidic devices for concentrating and separating microbes, allowing for faster and earlier detection of dangerous organisms in fluids ranging from drinking water to blood. Fabrication will be done using an in-house semiconductor fabrication facility, and characterization will be done using state of the art facilities in the biology department. The skills gained in this PhD project will be valuable in the growing field of biotechnology.

In 2008, the IUEU Centre will be offering two scholarships for PhD research projects focused on the European Union, the integration process in general, or related areas of research. Applicants may be based in Politics, International Relations, History, Law, Economics, Commerce, EU Languages and Cultural Studies, or another discipline appropriate to the particular proposal.
The IUEU Centre is based on a consortium of six universities, with La Trobe and Macquarie as the two principal nodes and Griffith, Newcastle, Flinders and Murdoch as partner universities. This scholarship will be based with the principal supervisor at Macquarie University, but the Centre will facilitate co-supervision of appropriate expertise from another university in the consortium.

The competition identifies and rewards the academic excellence and leadership potential of 150 of the most accomplished second-year students from all disciplines for GSGLP (The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program).
The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program recognizes the 150 Global Leaders’ outstanding achievements and abilities by awarding each U.S. $3,000.
Based upon interviews, 75 of these student leaders are selected to represent the whole group at the annual Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute in New York City in July. At the Institute, students participate in leadership training and seminars on timely international issues.
To apply to the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program, students must be nominated by their universities in order to apply for this award. A nomination form can be presented to an academic for completion and sent to the Scholarships & Prizes Office, who will then submit nomination forms on behalf of each nominated student to the Foundation. Only applicants who meet the eligibility criteria described below will be considered for the award. Nominees must:
• have distinguished themselves as leaders in their community or school;
• have high academic standing as demonstrated by grades received in the final year of secondary school (high school) and first year in college or university. Eligible candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.4/4.0 or international equivalent, or be in the top 10% of his/her class;
• be full-time students in the second-year of a university undergraduate degree program at one of the universities invited to participate in the 2007-2008 program year;
• be pursuing their first undergraduate degree (all fields of study accepted); and demonstrate competency in spoken and written English. Proficiency in English is necessary to participate fully in the Global Leadership Institute.
Only nominated students will be asked to submit an application for the Global Leaders Program. Once the Scholarships & Prizes Office has received the nominations, selected students will be given the opportunity to apply. You cannot apply directly. An application consists of the following materials. These materials are not optional – all materials must be submitted in order for an application to be reviewed by the selection panel. Students should contact the program if they are unable to submit some materials.

Title: Statistical and computational methods for gene mapping
Description:
The project will focus on statistical and computational methods for locating disease susceptibility genes. This will be based mainly on genome wide association approaches with a particular emphasis on an approach known as DNA pooling. The DNA pooling approach greatly decreases the cost of genome wide association approaches but brings with it a new set of computational and statistical challenges. There will also be scope in the project for work on more general approaches utilising genomewide data, including work on gene expression and related bioinformatics. The project will address a wide range of disease phenotypes and as such can be readily tailored to accommodate the specific interests of the student.
The student will be based in the genetic epidemiology department ( http://genepi. qimr.edu. au/ ) at QIMR, Brisbane. QIMR is one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere. The genetic epidemiology department is the single largest grouping at QIMR and employs several internationally renowned researchers in the field.
