The research in the Department of Biology is organised into three programmes: Integrative Biology, Marine Biology, Microbial Evolution Research Group, and in an integrated Center of Excellence - Center for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CoE-CEES).

Currently, the Department of Biology holds a permanent academic staff of 32.

This position comes under the program for Marine Biology, which currently employs a permanent academic staff of 7, 1 adjunct associate professor (20%), and 2 technicians. The program also engages a varying number of internally and externally funded PhD students and post doc researchers, depending on funding. About 20 master students are associated with the program. Research focuses on the biology and biodiversity of macroalgae and planktonic algae, the ecology of soft bottom sediments and pelagic ecology. Research in pelagic ecology focuses on the behavior and ecology of zooplankton and fish, as well as their predator-prey relationships. Marine research is also carried out within the other research programs at the department and at CEES.

We are seeking a person with expertise and research profile in field-based ecological research on zooplankton or fish. The appointed candidate should strengthen, and complement the research that is already carried out at the department and establish a field-based activity in marine pelagic ecology, alternatively in combination with experimental studies. It is expected that the appointed candidate will aim at acquiring external funding to subsidise his/her research. A doctoral degree, strong publication record, and teaching experience are required.

The person appointed must be able and willing to participate in teaching, supervision and examination in marine biology at all levels (bachelor, master, PhD), as well as teaching more general undergraduate courses. The appointed person must also undertake administrative duties in accordance with current provisions.

NTNU Social Research Trondheim invites application for one three years research position as PhD fellow in social anthropology. 7 PhD and three PostDoc positions in short range sensing, localization and wireless communication 09. May 2008

7 PhD scholarships and 3 PostDoc fellowships related to the MELODY project are offered within the area of Wireless sensor networks at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications , NTNU and at the Department of Informatics , University of Oslo in collaboration with Rikshospitalet University Hospital and Norwegian Defence Research Establishment. The scholarships are financed by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) under the VERDIKT program . The project is on medical sensing, localization, and communications using ultra wideband technology (MELODY) for 7 years (2008-2015) and is a joint effort among Rikshospitalet University Hospital, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, and University of Oslo. The project will have strong collaboration with several top international universities and leading industry in areas of wireless technology and medical sensing. The goal of the project is to develop more basic understanding of, and novel and more efficient principles for the above mentioned area, and address improvements in short range medical sensing, localization, and energy-efficient and robust wireless communications for inside and on body applications.

1. Ultra Wideband Communication Three PhD and one Postdoc fellowships are available in the area of wireless sensor network and will focus on cognitive wireless sensor networks, signal processing for robust in-body/on-body communications, and distributed signal processing for communications (joint optimization of source-channel coding and modulation, (etc.), where energy minimization of and spectrum utilization are emphasized. Algorithms based on bio-inspired networks with self-awareness, learning capability, and use of artificial intelligence (AI) will be investigated. The overall optimization aims at the end-to-end throughput, minimization of delay and bit error rate/packet error rate, and the reduction of the effect of interferences
2. Microelectronics for Ultra Wideband Localization Two PhD and one Postdoc fellowships are available in microelectronics implementation for high precision in-body/on-body localization and will focus on time-domain implementations of impulse radio based solutions using wireless sensor network in nanometer scale microelectronics. The candidates must be able to handle the full design cycle for custom-designed microelectronics. Implemented solutions must be demonstrated in prototype setup. In conjunction with prototyping some programming skills for microcontrollers are required. Background in RF design would be an advantage.

3. Ultra Wideband Radar Two PhD and one Postdoc fellowships are available in ultra wideband (UWB) radar for medical application and will focus on short range sensing and imaging of human body. The team will be using a prototype UWB radar system for measuring heart beat and other vital signs parameters. The initial work will focus on determining optimal frequency range and signal processing methods for extraction of different body parameters, where time-frequency- space analysis, phased array imaging and other signal processing methods will be investigated PhD candidates working in Topic #1 will be enrolled at NTNU in Trondheim, while PhD candidates working in Topics #2 and #3 will be enrolled at the University of Oslo. The candidates in Trondheim will be associated with the Signal Processing Group at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications at NTNU while candidates in Oslo will be associated with either Interventional Centre, Rikshospitalet University Hospital, Micro Electronics Group, Department of Informatics, University of Oslo or Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). The candidates associated with FFI may require security clearance. They will all work in strong and active scientific environments, and the project will incorporate collaboration with several foreign partners, including National and European industry. Absolute requirement is that active international publication ofresearch results in high impact, top peer-reviewed journals and conferences must be pursued.

We seek highly motivated individuals holding a masters degree or equivalent education in electrical/computer engineering, communication technology, microelectronics, or other relevant disciplines. 2 PhD-positions at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (“Flow distribution and instabilities in Multi-Channel Heat Exchangers”)

Two PhD research fellowships on“Flow distribution and instabilities in Multi-Channel Heat Exchangers” are available at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Energy and Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology. The fellowships arewithin a project financed by Statoil-Hydro and the Gas Technology Center SINTEF-NTNU«Flow mal-distribution and thermo-hydraulic flow instabilities».

The objective of the current project is to improve fundamental understanding and prediction capabilities of cryogenic thermo-hydraulic flow instabilities and flow mal-distribution phenomena related to LNG process units. The main goal of this PhD is to perform analytical and experimental investigation of flow instabilities observed in two-phase flow through parallel interacting channels in heat exchangers. A strong modeling-experimental-simulation activity coupling is intended in the PhD projects. The development of analytical models to describe and analyze the detailed physics of flow mal-distribution in multi-channel heat exchangers is expected. One and two-dimensional models should be considered. These models will require empirical data as closure relations. Therefore, an experimental facility capable of providing such data and model validation will be designed and constructed.
PhD candidates are expected to hold a master’s level degree in a subject relevant for the PhD project and to have a good combination of knowledge and skills in the following areas:
Experimental research, thermo-hydraulics, heat transfer and fluid flow, mathematical modeling, scientific computing, and programming.
Each PhD scholarship is limited to 3 years without duties. It is required that the person employed satisfies the requirements for PhD students, participates in the course program of the PhD studies, and finishes the PhD degree within 3 years.

PhD scholarship available on "The Right to Health through litigation" (law/economics/social sciences/medicine/ethics)

We invite applications to write a PhD as part of a multi-disciplinary research project focusing on the role of litigation in the shaping of health policies in low and middle-income countries. Health right litigation has over the past two decades been on the increase in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Do such litigation strategies hold a potential for advancing the human right to health, or do they reinforce inequalities by primarily benefitting the more resourceful? The project investigates under what conditions litigants succeed with health rights claims as well as the effects of such litigation: on legal developments, on health policies and budgets, and on health services on the ground (see project outline at http://www.cmi.no/research/project/?1128=right-to-health-through-litigation).

The research project is based at the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) in Bergen, and is undertaken in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen; Harvard Law School, USA; the Center for Applied Legal Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), Bangladesh, and individual researchers in a number of countries.

Qualifications
The international research team is composed of researchers with a background in political science; law; economics; anthropology; medicine and ethics, and applications are invited from all of these fields. Applicants should have an MA or equivalent university degree. Academic or practical experience from relevant fields is an advantage but not a condition.

English is the working language of the project. Candidate must have sufficient command of the English language to participate in discussions and write the PhD in English.

To enable synergies with the rest of the research group it is a condition that the PhD candidate is located in Bergen during the grant period (except during field work, courses, exchanges etc). The grant period is 4 years, including one year of work for the CMI as the host institution. The International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) is seeking to hire an experienced researcher with expertise in the field of security studies.

2 POSITIONS AS DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS (SKO/post code 1017) IN INTERNATIONAL HISTORY are available at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo.
The Faculty of Humanities wishes to strengthen research in international history and is therefore advertising two doctoral research fellowships. The successful candidates will be working in one or two of the following departments: Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH), Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS) and Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages (ILOS).
The selected candidates will investigate questions pertaining to the history of non-Nordic countries. The topic of the dissertation may be national/regional history, transnational history or international relations in a historical perspective.
The selected candidates are expected to affiliate with an existing research milieu or network and to contribute to the further development of these.
The project description must be written in English. The dissertation itself is to be written in English or another non-Nordic language of particular relevance to the topic of the dissertation.
The position is available for a period of three years. The successful candidates must assume their positions no later than 1. October 2008. If the applicant has worked as a doctoral research fellow previously to being hired at the Faculty of Humanities, that period of time will be deducted from the allotted 3 year period. At NTNU, Centre for Quantifiable Quality of Service in Communication Systems there are multiple vacant scholarships for PhD studies. The Centre is a Centre of Excellence (CoE) under the scheme initiated by The Research Council of Norway to enable Norwegian research groups to carry on long-term, basic research at a high international standard.

The Centre deals with Quality of Service (QoS) issues in heterogeneous, multilayered networks where packet switching technology is employed. The Centre works within the following areas: new network structures, multimedia signal processing, dependability, traffic and information security as applied to multiparty communication between stationary and mobile users. "QoS Mechanisms for Dynamic Networks", encompassing QoS issues in an interdomain context. The focus will be on dependability and resource allocation both in unicast and multicast architectures. A PhD research fellowship is offered in the field of underwater acoustic communication and underwater sensor network at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (http://www.iet. ntnu.no), Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Recent developments in information and communication technology have opened new possibilities for observation and monitoring of the marine environment. New concepts, based on autonomous sensors working together in wireless communication networks are becoming feasible for monitoring of oceanographic and environmental parameters and for estimation of fish and plankton abundance.

The goal of this PhD project is to participate in the development of new marine observation methodology based on autonomous sensors and underwater communication networks. The fields of underwater acoustics, signal processing and electronics are particular relevant fields in this context. We seek highly motivated individuals holding a master’s degree in physics, telecommunications or other relevant disciplines. A previous experience in underwater acoustic communication system and/or instrumentation is preferred.
A PhD fellowship at NTNU is normally awarded for 3-4 years with 0-25% of the time spent on teaching and other academic work for the department.
