The Institute for Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science
The Institute for Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science will be offering two PhD Scholarships which will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus a maintenance grant at the same rate as the Research Councils (£12,960 per annum in 2008-09). Recipients will be expected to do some teaching as part of the terms of the Scholarship. The Scholarships will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic performance. Candidates must hold a good Honours degree (First or 2i) or a Master's degree at merit or distinction in a relevant subject or equivalent.
The scholarship competition is open to all postgraduate research applicants. UK, EU and overseas fee paying students as well as full-time and part-time postgraduate research students are invited to apply.

Applications are invited for a three year post-doctoral position, based at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, to conduct neuro-imaging research into the dynamic neural systems underlying human language comprehension, working in an interdisciplinary cross-linguistic research environment, with access to state-of-the art MEG (306-channel Elekta/Neuromag VectorView) and MRI (Siemens Trio 3T) imaging facilities.
This position is funded by an interdisciplinary EPSRC (UK) grant to Lorraine Tyler (Centre for Speech Language and Brain, Cambridge), William Marslen-Wilson (MRC-CBSU), Anna Korhonen (Computing Lab, Cambridge) and Paula Buttery (Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics) , which aims to integrate research in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psycholinguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Modern advances in NLP provide much more realistic analyses of the statistical properties of language use. The aim of the project is to integrate these analyses with neuro-imaging investigations of how brain systems respond to variations in the statistical properties of linguistic inputs at different levels of description (morphological, syntactic, semantic).
You should have doctoral training in neuro-imaging with a strong interest in studying the neuro-cognition of language, and a willingness to take on the challenge of systematically relating the statistical properties of linguistic inputs to the statistical properties of the dynamic neural
response to these inputs.
The starting salary will be in the range of £25,368 - £31,048 per annum, depending upon qualifications and experience. This is supported by a flexible pay and reward policy, and optional MRC final salary Pension Scheme. We offer 30 days annual leave entitlement. On site parking is

The University of Teesside is offering three full-time Research Doctoral Scholarships across the broad theme of business applied to any area of the public, private or voluntary sectors or partnership working between them. Key areas of research strength within Teesside Business School (TBS) are around public sector management, public governance, HRM, urban and rural regeneration, leisure and tourism, marketing, organisational learning, leadership and strategy. The Institute of Psychiatry (IOP), Kings College London is advertising a 3-year PhD Studentship within the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/SGDP, Section of Developmental Neuropsychology & Neuroimaging, starting in January 2009.
The PhD is funded by the Department of Health via the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Specialist Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Mental Health award to South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and the IOP at KCL, London.
The aim of the project is to study the effects of pharmacological manipulations on functional brain activation in children & adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during disorder relevant cognitive functions. The project is collaborative between the Departments of Child Psychiatry and the Department of Psychological Medicine (Prof Declan Murphy), IOP, King's College London.
The Section of Experimental Psychology and Neuroimaging of Childhood Disorders, headed by Professor Katya Rubia, is part of the Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and is located at the MRC-Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre (SGDP). The Section uses a comprehensive and multimodal approach to elucidate the cognitive, neurocognitive and neurobiological basis of childhood disorders, using neuropychology together with functional, structural and pharmacological magnetic resonance imaging. This project will investigate the comparison between two clinically overlapping, and relatively prevalent childhood disorders, i.e. ADHD and ASD, in their brain activation, brain structure and their neurofunctional response to psychopharmacologic al manipulations. The psychopharmacologic al manipulations will involve Dopamine, Noradrenaline, and Serotonin agonists to elucidate underlying neurotransmitter abnormalities in patients.
The IOP, King's College London achieved a 5* rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the highest possible rating for quality. The Departments of Child Psychiatry/SGDP and Psychological Medicine, have an international reputation for the study of child psychiatry.
Successful candidates will have a first degree in Psychology, Pharmacology, Medicine, or any related Neuroscience area. Relevant experience with statistical data analysis, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, or neuropsychopharmaco logy are desirable.
The pay will be £15,076k p/a (plus annual increments).

This project is jointly sponsored by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Sellafield Limited and the University of Central Lancashire. It aims to examine the forecasting and management of skill requirements in the nuclear industry, with initial focus on the decommissioning industry. The project's objectives will be to generate a baseline of knowledge on the theory and practice of skills forecasting and management on very long projects; to document, compare and contrast current skills forecasting practice amongst current site licensing companies in the UK nuclear industry; to develop models of good practice for exploratory discussion and monitored application by each tier of the industry and to propose a model of good practice for adoption by the industry.
The project will involve extensive interaction with senior managers and strategists in the industry and will provide a unique experience for anyone interested in developing a career in the UK nuclear industry. It would suit a graduate with a numerate background and an understanding of organisations, who is enthusiastic to learn about business modelling techniques and the manpower and skill planning which is critical to major projects. This is an outstanding opportunity to join the strategic development team of a fast growing industry and secure a doctoral qualification.

Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship in Environmental Science, Policy and Management

ESPOM is an Erasmus Mundus Masters course in Environmental Sciences,Policy and Management operated by four leading European Universities and supported by the European Commission. MESPOM prepares students for identifying and implementing solutions to complex environmental challenges, especially in an international context.
The MESPOM study programme is in English and lasts two years. The students study in at least three out of four consortium universities: the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University (Sweden), the University of Manchester (UK), Central European University, Budapest, and the University of the Aegean (Lesvos, Greece).
The European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus programme provides scholarships to outstanding students from countries outside the European Union toattend MESPOM and to scholars to participate in teaching and research. Additional forms of financial assistance are available to students of all nationalities. MESPOM invites applications from all countries. Successful candidates must have a good first degree in a subject related to environmental sciences, policy and management. Candidates with other first degrees are also considered if they show commitment to environmental issues, usually through work experience.

The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences has made available a number of post graduate bursaries, one of which has been allocated to the social sciences. The bursary provides tuition fees and generous subsistence funding to support your PhD study. Bursaries are offered on a competitive basis and it is anticipated that the successful candidate would commence study as early as possible in the autumn of 2008.
Any area of social science study will be considered, however the strengthening of current strategic areas of importance and critical mass in research suggests the following are most likely to meet with support:

- Social science and health (particularly health consumer diversity)
- Social science and youth/childhood
Any combination of underpinning social science disciplines would be acceptable, however we have the strongest supervisory standing in sociology, social policy, psychology and philosophy. We are an applied social science faculty and attention to the social outcomes of primary research would be welcomed. We do however value theoretical, epistemological and conceptual approaches to social and human science issues.

Applications are invited for a 3-yr PhD studentship, funded by School of Psychology,
Bangor University (UK), and supervised by Dr Jörn Diedrichsen. The studentship is available

The student will join the laboratory for Human Motor Control Lab, Bangor. Work in the
laboratory focuses on the computational principles and neural underpinnings of human
motor control, especially in the areas of bimanual coordination and function of the
cerebellum. In behavioral studies we use robotic devices to simulate novel objects and new
dynamic environments, and study how healthy participants learn and perform novel tasks.
We develop computational models of coordination to understand the problems the brain
solves as we interact with the environment. Neural underpinnings of these processes are
studied using fMRI in which subjects perform or learn well-controlled motor tasks using
fMRI-compatible robotic devices. Finally, studies with patients with lesions in the
cerebellum allow us to test specific hypotheses about the functional role of the
cerebellum. The PhD project will consist of an associated but independent series of studies
related to this work.
The Studentship will be undertaken within the School of Psychology, which was given the
top rating of 5*A in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. The School houses a
3T MRI scanner, and a number of robotic and eye tracking devices (also fMRI-compatible)

Quality of Life and Travel Complexity in the Changing Urban Environment (In collaboration with MRC-McLean Hazel Ltd, an Edinburgh-based transport consultancy)
This PhD studentship will use complex secondary datasets to explore how travel patterns and behaviour (including commuting and other trips) have changed over time in urban Britain. The project will study the effect of demographic restructuring, including the growth of more single person households, on travel patterns, as well as geographical variations in travel behaviour between cities, towns and rural areas in Britain. Of particular interest will be the links between travel behaviour and quality of life, including health, housing, social inclusion and general well-being. It is hypothesised that because of demographic and societal restructuring travel behaviour is becoming more complex, and transport policy therefore much more interdependent with a range of urban policy areas. By unpacking the explicit links between transport and other aspects of quality of urban life, more efficacious urban policies can be defined, implemented and evaluated.

Growing up sustainably? Young people and ‘sustainable’ urban development

The University of Northampton invites applications for a 3-year PhD studentship, to support a research project investigating impacts of ‘sustainable’ urban development upon children and young people’s everyday geographies and environmental behaviours.
The successful applicant will be based in the Centre for Children and Youth, a nationally flagged centre of excellence based at The University of Northampton. Supervisory support and research training shall be provided by staff from the Centre for Children and Youth and from the University’s Field of Environmental Science (based in the School of Applied Sciences).
The Doctoral research project will entail a programme of quantitative and qualitative research regarding new urban developments in the English East Midlands. It is envisaged that this research will entail:
• short, semi-structured interviews with young people;
• in-depth, qualitative projects with young people (perhaps involving discussion groups, diary-work or visual methods);
• consultation with key decision-makers and planners involved in local processes of ‘sustainable’ urban development.
It is anticipated that the research project will lead to new empirical/theoretical understandings relating to one or more of the following areas: sustainability; environmental behaviours; nature-society relations; youth; urban development.
Applicants should possess a good Honours or Masters Degree in Geography or a cognate discipline. They should have demonstrable experience of qualitative and quantitative social research, and a commitment to researching with young people.

Following the successful AYLCF event we held last December, this 5-day capacity-building programme is designed to give participants the skill they need to conduct a climate change-related project after the event. Seed funding is also available to participants with the best projects.
The participants will be from 7 countries in East Asia, namely Indonesia , Malaysia , Singapore , Thailand , Japan , Korea , and Australia whose backgrounds are media, corporate, education, government, and education.

Applications are invited for three three-year, fulltime PhD research studentships for a study funded by The Leverhulme Trust. The study seeks to explore 'The socio political impact of virtual world learning on higher education' . This study will use participatory action research to examine staff and students from a wide range of disciplines in Higher Education Institutions across the UK. It will investigate their conceptions of and decisions about the way in which they teach and learn at the socio-political boundaries of reality. This study will focus on the exploration of three main themes and a studentship will be attached to each theme
1. Students' experiences of learning in immersive worlds.
2. Pedagogical design.
3. Learner identity.
Candidates will have a degree in education, social science or a related discipline. The repeated failure of major projects and programmes in the public and private sectors has been linked with the inability of project and programme managers to manage crisis situations effectively. One certainty in a world increasingly saturated with complexity and uncertainty is that the future will be punctuated by sudden, unexpected, and potent events that will require a rapid response. The variety of crisis that can arise in projects and programmes is enourmous.
However, there are very few detailed accounts of crisis management. This PhD study will explore the phenomenon of crisis in projects and programmes - its nature, its causes and its resulting managerial behaviour. We envisage that the findings of the study will have significant theoretical and practical implications.
Applications are invited from exceptionally qualified candidates for this fully funded full-time studentship under the supervision of Dr Elmar Kutsch. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline. Experience of working on projects is desirable, although not essential. The mindsets of effective programme office managers: A phenomenographic study

In business and government, programmes are used to transform strategies and policies into desired outcomes and benefits. The 'programme office' is the information hub for the programme, performing on behalf of the programme leadership team a variety of functions associated with programme support. Some programme offices have wider responsibilities for the maintenance of corporate standards and processes.
There is a growing recognition that the role of programme office manager requires an individual with a certain mindset, but little is known about the conceptual attributes that make up that mindset. Phenomenography is an established research approach for identifying and mapping the qualitatively different ways in which people conceive a given aspect of reality, in this case the work of a programme office manager. The approach leads to the identification of the key attributes of conception at a number of levels (usually three of four) that distinguish and explain why some individuals are more effective than others.
