The chair of Surface Technology and Tribology within the department of Engineering Technology has a job opening for a PhD-student on the project "Mechanical and thermal activated self healing surfaces made of composite ceramics for mechanical components".

Project
The project is part of a national program on self healing materials financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. Self healing materials are recognized as a new class of engineering materials with the capacity to more or less autonomously repair internal damage.

Oxide ceramics have large potential to be applied in technological applications for their high temperature stability and erosion / corrosion resistance. An important limitation for application is a high coefficient of friction when in contact with a countersurface. Besides that a high coefficient of friction does result in energy losses, it also increases the risk of crack growth, originating from the surface. When oxide ceramics, like Al2O3 and ZrO2 and their composites (ZTA and ADZ), are doped with CuO, it is very interesting to observe that a very thin CuO layer is present on the surface after sintering and machining. Previous research has shown that this thin layer is self - healing when a countersurface is sliding over the surface. The project is focusing on further experimental investigation and modelling of this mechanism, a first application of the developed materials in valve seats of engines as well as optimizing the microstructure for specific applications.

Currently, a Postdoc is working on the project for about half a year. His main task is modelling of mass transport responsible for the layer formation. In the beginning of the PhD project a close cooperation and transfer of knowledge with the Postdoc will take place.

The PhD research comprises experimental preparation and characterisation of the samples as well as further modelling of the contact and self healing behaviour of the surface layer. The focus of the PhD student is on coatings on machine elements and optimalisation of the coating for a specific application.

The performance of the self healing composite oxide ceramic will be quantified in a demonstrator valve / valve seat that has to perform under heavy tribological conditions. The demonstrator applications are engines on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and enhanced diesel engines for heavy duty applications. This demonstrator will be developed by TNO Science and Industry.

Profile

You have completed a Masters in mechanical engineering, materials science or equivalent with interest in ceramics and/or tribology. You are proficient in spoken and written English and you have well developed social skills to co-operatively work in a research group.

You will be based at the Laboratory for Surface Technology and Tribology of the University of Twente and be joining an innovative and diverse group working on Tribology, Surface Technology and Materials. FUTURE LEADERS SCHOLARSHIP

Prasetiya Mulya Business School awards up to four scholarships for full-time Magister Manajemen (MM) students each year.

Subject Areas and Type of Scholars:

Open to highly talented and qualified potential leaders from financially disadvantaged family. Preference is given to any students who possess the necessary aptitude, personal qualities and interest in management.

Details of the Award:

Four scholarships are available each year paying tuition fee, books and living allowance within the maximum tenure of 20 months.

Program Admission:

Application for the scholarship will be open each year. The full-time MM Prasetiya Mulya program runs two intakes each year. The admission process begins three to four months before the program intake. The matriculation program starts in early March or July. Applicants must complete both MM Prasetiya Mulya Application Form and Prasetiya Mulya Future Leaders Scholarship Application Form.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Indonesian citizen who can demonstrate leadership potential and interest in and commitment to community and national development.

2. Hold a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from any legally accredited Indonesian or overseas institution. For overseas graduates, valid proof of full scholarship is required. A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.25 (on a 4.00 scale) is required.

3. Applicant must be under 30 years of age when lodging the application.

4. Preferably having a minimum of two-year full time professional work experience after the completion of their undergraduate degree when lodging the application.

5. Pass Prasetiya Mulya screening process.

6. Preferably having: International or Institutional TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based).

7. Not currently enrolled in graduate or post-graduate program or school, or has already obtained a Master's degree or equivalent.

8. Not in receipt of other equivalent award or scholarship offering similar or other benefits at the time of the award.

9. Demonstrate they are from financially disadvantaged family and that without the scholarship s/he will not be able to study for our graduate (MM) program.

The research activities will be situated within the Institute for
Materials Research (IMO), which has a strong focus on novel material systems for micro- and organic electronics, molecular electronics, optoelectronics, and biosensors. The postdoctoral researcher will strengthen the cross-disciplinary approach of IMO and support actively the ongoing activities at the boundary between the domains of life sciences and nanostructure physics. More specifically, the candidate will initiate and pursuit advanced experimental studies in the field of single-molecule biophysics with a special emphasis on the electronic and nanomechanical aspects of antibody-antigen interactions and nucleic acids. The candidate can expect a fully-equipped laboratory and close scientific cooperation in a stimulating environment.

Job description
The successful applicant will be involved in a joint research project between the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED) at the University of Hasselt and the Center for Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology (CNCM) at the University of Liège. The project is aimed at deciphering the involvement of neurotransmitters as communication signals promoting cortical development (mainly migration and differentiation processes), with focus on neurotransmitters interacting with ionotropic receptors. The main techniques used in this project include: ex vivo brain slices, immunohistochemistr y, molecular biology (siRNA technology), microfluorimetry and electrophysiology (patch-clamping) .

Profile and diploma
The applicant should hold a master degree in life sciences (e.g. medical sciences, biomedical sciences, bioengineering, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology) . Students in their last master year can also apply.
This project will be executed on two different sites (Hasselt and Liège) and will give the candidate a double diploma. Hence, we are seeking a candidate who is ready to work in both institutions. Knowledge of English is a prerequisite.

The PhD student will conduct research in the field of molecular imprinted polymers (MIP) which will be used as building blocks for chemo- and biosensors. The project focuses on the changes in fluorescence induced by the target molecule upon binding with the MIP embedded in a matrix of conjugated polymers. The project comprises the study of the underlying mechanism of the observed changes and the design of a specific sensor.

Diploma and profile
Master degree (or equivalent) in either physics, chemistry, biomedical sciences, bio-engineer, engineer in physics, engineer in chemistry or civil engineer. Students in their final year can also apply. The candidate must master either the Dutch or the English language.
