Post-Doc Position: Center for Tropical Marine Ecology

The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), an associate member of the Leibniz Society, addresses ecological and socio-economic issues related to the sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs and sea grass beds. Research and teaching at the Center are devoted to the structure and functions of these ecosystems, their resources and their vulnerability to human interventions and natural changes. The research is conducted within interdisciplinary partnership projects with institutions and universities in the tropics.
The social-ecological systems (SES) analysis group at the ZMT investigates human-nature relations. Participatory approaches to the generation of social-ecological system understanding and to the identification of ways to steer coastal change into more desirable directions are major foci. The SES group operates a research programme in three coastal regions of Indonesia (SPICE Cluster 6). We are now looking for a social or natural scientist with a strong interdisciplinary research orientation. The post is embedded in the two key research themes of SPICE Cluster 6 (Social-ecological systems analysis and Governance). The research under this post should provide new insights on the potentials of alternative livelihood options (e.g. marine polyculture) as socially, economically and ecologically sustainable income sources for Indonesian coastal communities. A focus on innovations is encouraged. The field focus of this post is in the Spermonde Coral Archipelago but the research should provide results of wider relevance.
The position is at the level of E13 and initially funded from 1.10 2008 until 30.8 2010. Further work is envisaged. The ZMT is interested in increasing the number of women in the field of science and encourages qualified women to apply. Given similar levels of qualification, physically handicapped applicants will be given preference. Interviews will be held in the period August 28 th until September 5th .

The National Complete Streets Coalition is seeking a Complete Streets Fellow to work with a diverse coalition of prominent national organizations working for the adoption of complete streets policies across the country. This is an tremendous opportunity for a recent graduate to take on significant responsibility while learning about transportation reform issues and working directly with a variety of well-known leaders and organizations in the field. The National Complete Streets Coalition is working for adoption and implementation of Complete Streets policies at the federal, state, and local level. Complete streets are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and across a complete street. Active Coalition members include Smart Growth America, AARP, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the American Planning Association, the League of American Bicyclists, the American Public Transportation Association, and many others (see the 'Who We Are' page).

Responsibilities will include:

Requirements: The candidate should have a strong interest in smart growth, transportation issues, or related areas. Candidates should have at least a bachelor?s degree and either and educational background or work experience in urban planning, environmental studies, public policy, or a related field. This position requires a self-motivated and detail-oriented person with excellent organizational skills. The candidate should be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates must have exemplary research and writing skills, and an ability to synthesize diverse material. The candidate should be highly computer literate with specific experience in website maintenance, web research, database management, and using the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Knowledge of InDesign or graphics software, html, css, Joomla! and/or other open source web interfaces are a definite plus.
Compensation: The Fellowship comes with a stipend of $1,800 per month. He or she will receive five days of paid sick leave or vacation and will have paid leave on all federal holidays that occur within their tenure at SGA.
Health benefits will not be offered.
Timeframe: Full-time, forty hours a week for six months. This position will very likely lead to full-time, permanent employment with the National Complete Streets Coalition.

Bosch & Siemens Hausgeraete GmbH (www.bsh-group. com) is currently looking for intern candidates from Indonesia with European educational background for the period of September 2008 - February 2009.
As a brief explanation of the project, Bosch & Siemens Hausgeraete GmbH, in short BSH, is currently conducting a project in Indonesia to introduce a new technology for cooking which runs on plant oil. This new cooker technology is called PROTOS (www.plantoilcooker .org).
This project was initiated as part of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility program to help improve the quality of environment and health in developing countries by using a carbon neutral fuel for cooking purposes. A Clean Development Mechanism component is included in this project through the substitution of kerosene with plant oil. Our local partners include the Indonesian Center for Estate Crops Research and Development (under the Ministry of Agriculture) besides other local potential partners who will look into 100% local production of this product.
Being a part of this project will enable one to learn from cross cultural partnerships and bottom-of-the- pyramid mechanisms. We are looking for students who have a strong desire to learn and to contribute to the success of this project.

- Willing to stay in Indonesia (stationed in Jakarta) for a period of 6 months

He or she would also be the main person bridging between the establishment process of the local production and the engineers in BSH Munich, making this the reason for our desire to seek for someone who is familiar with both the Indonesia and West European culture. MSc/PhD Scholarships (second call) from IRCSET, Ireland The Embark Initiative’s Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme is designed for either Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering or technology.
The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technology invites applications for funding from intending postgraduate researchers under the Embark Initiative Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (2008).
The 2008 programme will fund approximately 80 new entrant Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering and technology.
A number of additional scholarships will be jointly funded by industry as part of IRCSET’s Enterprise Partnership Scheme (see below for details). This scheme fosters mutually beneficial collaboration between the academic and commercial research sectors.

The open position is for a Ph.D. Student or Post-Doc. It is available from Aug. 1, 2008 with a duration of 3 years and the possibility of prolongation up to 2 years. The salary is based on E13 TV-L.

The goal of the project SHARE-it is to develop a scalable, adaptive system of add-ons to sensor and assistive technology so that they can be modularly integrated into an intelligent home environment to enhance the individual's autonomy. The system will be designed to inform and assist the user and his/her caregivers through monitoring and mobility help. Thus, we plan to contribute to the development of the next generation of assistive devices for older persons or people with disabilities so that they can be self-dependent as long as possible. We focus on add-ons to be compatible with existing technologies and to achieve an easier integration into existing systems. We also aim at adaptive systems as transparent, and consequently, easy to use to the person as possible. Scalability is meant to include or remove devices from the system in a simple, intuitive way. The focus is the development of an adaptive biosensor-based module that measures biometric data, learn to classify them in order to conclude about changes in affectives states like stress.

The applicant will develop an adaptive biosensor-based assistance module. First typical cognitive, sensory, and motor deficits in a target population have to be assessed and have to be represented in a knowledge base. Second online information will be received from a biosensor module sensitive to the emotional and attentive states of the user. Based on both types of information a profile of the user will be generated, continuously updated and used for the adaptive user support. A platform for this assistance module will be an intelligent walker and an autonomous wheelchair developed in SHARE-it. Practical experience in a number of the following areas is desired:
- software design and development
- signal processing
- multi-sensor user activity profiles/ multisensory information processing
- processing of biometrical and physiological data
- knowledge-based systems and uncertainty management
Additional knowledge that would be appreciated:
- interdisciplinary background
- experience with international research projects
- interest in psychological/medical applications
The successful applicant of the position is expected to autonomously communicate and interact with the European cooperation partners that jointly develop the SHARE-it modules and platforms.
