Applications are invited for a 3-yr PhD studentship, funded by School of Psychology,
Bangor University (UK), and supervised by Dr Jörn Diedrichsen. The studentship is available
from earliest October 1st, 2008 (start date flexible). Applications are accepted until the
Position is filled, the review of Applications is starting on September 13th. The
studentship is funded at ESRC rates, currently GBP12,940 per year.

The student will join the laboratory for Human Motor Control Lab, Bangor. Work in the
laboratory focuses on the computational principles and neural underpinnings of human
motor control
, especially in the areas of bimanual coordination and function of the
cerebellum. In behavioral studies we use robotic devices to simulate novel objects and new
dynamic environments, and study how healthy participants learn and perform novel tasks.
We develop computational models of coordination to understand the problems the brain
solves as we interact with the environment. Neural underpinnings of these processes are
studied using fMRI in which subjects perform or learn well-controlled motor tasks using
fMRI-compatible robotic devices. Finally, studies with patients with lesions in the
cerebellum allow us to test specific hypotheses about the functional role of the
cerebellum. The PhD project will consist of an associated but independent series of studies
related to this work.

The Studentship will be undertaken within the School of Psychology, which was given the
top rating of 5*A in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. The School houses a
3T MRI scanner, and a number of robotic and eye tracking devices (also fMRI-compatible)
to record and manipulate movements. The School offers a thriving research and learning

Economics, Markets, Institutions With its interdisciplinary (theoretical, quantitative and institutional) approach, the program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, and the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomic impact on the functioning of markets, as well as on productivity and growth.
A distinctive character of the PhD program is the strong integration of theoretical, technical and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy.
Theoretical methodologies and models will therefore tested through the methodical/systemat ic investigation of actual cases. At the end of the program, students will be able to catch commonalities as well as distinctive characters of the several markets, in reference to
economic laws, market regulations, contractual, managing and organizational solutions.

Political Systems and Institutional Change
The PhD Program aims to make students familiar with analytical tools and methodologies of investigation elaborated within different contemporary traditions in social sciences, thereby providing the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to both evaluate comparatively the performance of institutional systems, and elaborate proposals for structural reforms. The courses will especially focus on the historical, political, institutional and economic dynamics that
have been characterising the development of European and ex Soviet countries after the Second Word War. They will then consider among other topics: the institutional and decisional dynamics of European countries and the European Union including the trends towards multilevel governance both at the European and at the domestic level (federalisation, independent regulatory authorities, etc.); transatlantic relations EU-US; relations between politics, social
processes and political economy decisions; paths of economic and political development; the institutional workings of international organisations; the characters of some geographical areas of special relevance.

Duration: 3 years

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign PhD students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

Classes begin in March 2009.

Tuition Exemptions :PhD students are exempt from tuition and fees. Annual Scholarship: Annual scholarship amount is +/- 13.638,00 Euros gross, corresponding to +/- 2.270,00 Euros gross paid every two months. Scholarships are awarded for three years and are confirmed yearly.

Scholarships benefit from tax breaks.

A few scholarships in the area of mathematics, geometry and computer
graphics are available. They are a part of the *NRF*

Rendering in Co-Space". The work
will be carried out at the Centre for Advance Media Technologies (CAMTech)
of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The goal of the project is
to propose an efficient interoperable mathematical model defining geometry,
visual appearance and tangible physical properties of objects in

The object definitions must be small in size and invariant to the rendering
platform used in Co-Space. The particular goals of the project include

differential equations, introduction of function-defined physical properties
to objects in Co-Space, and development of several exemplar applications
illustrating the usefulness of the proposed approach, including an ability
to establish physical contact with other party in Co-Space through haptic

Proposal for Phd subject in joint collaboration CIFRE CLS-LEGOS-TOTAL and in collaboration with COAS/Oregon State University

Objectives and description:

Among the various branches of physical oceanography, coastal physicaloceanography is one of the richest and most complex. It is also the area most likely to have a direct impact on society through issues such as coastal pollution, water quality, oils slick drift, sea level rise, coastal erosion. It also has a direct impact on fish stock management, maritime traffic monitoring and water sports events organisation. In the last decade, high resolution ocean modelling has become a core tools to answer the needs of these various fields. However, model forecasts have to be corrected by satellite and in situ data, routinely available in the coastal environment. This correction is applied through data assimilation methods. The POC/LEGOS team is one of the few scientific groups to use tackle data assimilation in the coastal environment.

The proposed work follows up on Matthieu Le Hénaff (LEGOS 2008) thesis which dealt with a 3D coastal model of the Bay of Biscay. This thesisaim was to determine how an observational network could detect the degrees of freedom in numerical models and how it could forces the error modes in order to improve the forecast. To this end stochastic modelling was used on the POC pc cluster. It is considered crucial in this new thesis to carry one with this approach. Indeed, the results are a useful only if the model is reasonably good and if the origins of model errors
have been identified.

The proposed thesis aims to develop a positive feedback between model error analysis and the optimisation of the observational network. Novel statistical method will be used. These will focus on the events probability rather than their intensity or their phase. Particular attention will be paid to new observational tools such as SWOT altimetry, coastal radars, gliders, on top of existing data.

Work Plan

Over the duration of the PhD, several aspects of coastal oceanography will be investigated:

1) Regional Modelling:

The geographic area is centred on the Islands of Sulawesi and Borneo and could extend from 11°E to 126°E, and from 8°S to 8°N.It includes the Java Sea, the straits of Makassar, Lombok and Flores as well as the Celebes Sea and could potentially also include part of the South China
Sea
.. The Seas of Banda and Molucca would not be included. This would simplify the prescription of boundary conditions. The resolution of the grid would be 1/12°. If needed and if possible, a higher resolution could be implemented. The model domain would be nested in a regional or
global 1/4° model configuration. Special care will be taken to make best use of recent work by the INSTANT community and by the LOCEAN and LEGOS laboratories on the region.

2) Model error analysis:

The aim is to determine model error by comparing output from a long hindcast to past observations. To this end, the structure of theregional model ensemble representers will be studied. These representers will be characterised in terms of physical processes (eddies, coastal
waves, monsoon response).

3) New statistical methods:

Estimation theory is usually conducted in a Gaussian universe. This is not suited to the existence of extreme events (in terms of intensity) or the presence of remarkable one (in terms of frequency). As a result, Continuous Ranked Probability Score (Hersbach, 2000) will be used to
determine a model short term forecast ability. This is equivalent to investigating the coherence of errors between model forecast and observations. A physical interpretation of remarkable events will also be conducted.

4) Impact of new observations on the model:

The aim is to determine what impact new sets of observations would have on the observation of remarkable events in the region. To this end, the RMS method (Le Hénaff et al., 2008) will be applied to modelled observations or existing ones. If an analysis method is available, the
impact on forecast will be tested.

Coastal Radar observations are routinely conducted in Oregon. The candidate might be required to spend some time in Oregon in order to improve his understanding of the technology behind coastal radars data and their assimilation into models.
