PhD Studentship
Crisis Management in Project and Programme Management
International Centre for Programme Management
Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe's top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008.
The repeated failure of major projects and programmes in the public and private sectors has been linked with the inability of project and programme managers to manage crisis situations effectively. One certainty in a world increasingly saturated with complexity and uncertainty is that the future will be punctuated by sudden, unexpected, and potent events that will require a rapid response. The variety of crisis that can arise in projects and programmes is enourmous.
However, there are very few detailed accounts of crisis management. This PhD study will explore the phenomenon of crisis in projects and programmes - its nature, its causes and its resulting managerial behaviour. We envisage that the findings of the study will have significant theoretical and practical implications.
Applications are invited from exceptionally qualified candidates for this fully funded full-time studentship under the supervision of Dr Elmar Kutsch. The mindsets of effective programme office managers: A phenomenographic study
International Centre for Programme Management
Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe's top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008.
In business and government, programmes are used to transform strategies and policies into desired outcomes and benefits. The 'programme office' is the information hub for the programme, performing on behalf of the programme leadership team a variety of functions associated with programme support. Some programme offices have wider responsibilities for the maintenance of corporate standards and processes.
There is a growing recognition that the role of programme office manager requires an individual with a certain mindset, but little is known about the conceptual attributes that make up that mindset. Phenomenography is an established research approach for identifying and mapping the qualitatively different ways in which people conceive a given aspect of reality, in this case the work of a programme office manager. The approach leads to the identification of the key attributes of conception at a number of levels (usually three of four) that distinguish and explain why some individuals are more effective than others.
Applications are invited from exceptionally qualified candidates for this fully funded full-time studentship under the supervision of Dr David Partington. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline. Experience of working on projects and programmes is desirable, although not essential. An MBA or relevant specialist masters degree would be an advantage.

Distributed leadership in programme management
International Centre for Programme Management
Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe's top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008.
In business and government, programmes are used to transform strategies and policies into desired outcomes and benefits. Programmes usually consist of multiple related projects. The concept of the project manager as a single point of integrative project leadership and responsibility is widely accepted as a fundamental principle of good practice. Now, professional guidelines in the emerging discipline of programme management advocate a similar single, integrative leadership status for the role of the programme manager. In practice, however, the leadership of programmes is inevitably distributed or shared among a changing group of individuals. The collective nature of programme leadership has important consequences for the behaviours and mindsets of individuals and for the governance structures within which they operate. There is a significant opportunity and need for the creation of new knowledge in this domain, and the development of new theories based on empirical evidence.
Applications are invited from exceptionally qualified candidates for this fully funded full-time studentship under the supervision of Dr David Partington. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline. Experience of working on projects and programmes is desirable, although not essential. Modelling Rupture of CO2 Pipelines
Department of Chemical Engineering
Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is considered to be the most effective way of tackling the effects of global warming. This will require the large-scale capture, transportation and storage of CO2. In the case of coal fired power generation plants, pressurised pipelines are considered to be the most practical, and possibly the only option for transporting the captured CO2 for subsequent storage.
Given the enormous amounts of CO2 contained in such pipelines (typically several million tonnes), a prior knowledge of the release rate and subsequent dispersion in the event of pipeline rupture is central to assessing the failure impact. CO2 is toxic and when inhaled in large concentrations can lead to asphyxiation.
This exciting PhD project aims to extend our award winning work (http://www.ucl. ac.uk/chemeng/ staff/mahgerefte h) to develop a computer based model for predicting the failure consequences of CO2 pipelines. The project carried out in close collaboration with a major industrial partner is multidisciplinary involving a variety of subjects including, fluid mechanics, mathematics, heat transfer, quantitative risk assessment and computing. The experience gained is expected to equip the prospective PhD graduate with job opportunities in a variety of industrial sectors particularly in the oil and gas industry.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding First Class Chemical Engineering or Mathematics graduate (although other relevant disciplines will be considered) preferably with computing skills. The funding covers full tuition fees plus maintenance over three years and is open to suitably qualified overseas students.
UCL is consistently classed amongst the top Universities in the world. The UCL Chemical Engineering department in particular received the highest research rating in the most recent Government funded Research Assessment Exercise placing it amongst the only three such departments in the UK.

PhD position for Biologist / Physical Geographer / (Civil) Hydraulic Engineer
PhD position for Biologist / Physical Geographer / (Civil) Hydraulic Engineer Vacancy number CEME-RE-08417
General background:
The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) is a top research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). It comprises three centers: the Centre for Estuarine and Marine Ecology (CEME) in Yerseke, the Centre for Limnology (CL) in Nieuwersluis, and the Centre for Terrestrial Ecology (CTE) in Heteren. Mission of the NIOO (http://www.nioo.knaw.nl) is to carry out excellent fundamental and strategic research in ecology.
The department of Spatial Ecology of the CEME ( http://www.nioo.knaw.nl ) and the department of Community and Conservation Ecology Group at the University of Groningen ( http://www.rug.nl/biologie/onderzoek/onderzoekgroepen/cocon/people/index ) study how a fundamental understanding of i) interactions between organisms and their physical environment (i.e., how do currents and waves determine the living conditions of organisms and vice versa) and ii) the interactions between species (i.e., who eats what and how does that affect populations) can be used for sustainable management of salt marshes.
Research topic / Job description:
Salt marshes are important habitats along the Dutch coast, providing feeding grounds for migratory birds. Salt-marsh development is however increasingly threatened by sea-level rise and overgrazing by increasing goose populations. Salt marshes that are not grazed by geese are well able to keep up with sea-level rise by reducing hydrodynamic energy and trapping sediment within their tall vegetation. It is unknown how shortening of the vegetation by grazing reduces the ability to trap sediment and keep up with sea-level rise. Trapping sediment enhances the fertility of the marsh, and thereby canopy height. Too tall vegetation hampers bird grazing. Hence, implications of sea-level rise for the ability of salt marshes to continue to support large populations of grazing birds are also unknown thus far. Present project will unravel how the interacting effect of marsh vegetation, hydrodynamics, sediment trapping and bird grazing affect the future development of
salt marshes. This will be done by combining ecological and physical field studies, flume experiments and hydrodynamic modeling by two PhD students:
PhD 1 will study experimentally how (1) grazing intensity, (2) sediment fertility and (3) patchiness in the landscape affect the mechanistic relationship between vegetation characteristics and sedimentation/erosion processes. (For information on PhD-position 1, please contact Prof.dr. j.p.bakker@rug.nl)
PhD 2 will study experimentally the large-scale hydrodynamic and sedimentation processes and incorporate the results in a spatially explicit hydrodynamic model that can be used to predict long-term, large-scale dynamics of salt marshes in relation to grazing intensity, sediment fertility and patchiness.
We are currently looking for a candidate for PhD-position 2.
Requirements for PhD 2:
We are looking for a biologist or physical geographer or (civil) hydraulic engineer with a strong interest in the interaction between biological and physical processes as may occur in salt marshes. The candidate must be able to design and carry out experiments, and to analyse the results. Experience with mathematical modeling is a strong asset. Management skills and a good feeling for statistical interpretation of the results is essential to the job. Candidates should be capable to clearly report on their results, both orally and in writing. Candidates have in depth knowledge of their own research area, and are willing to extend this knowledge in other research areas that are crucial to the job. Supervision will be given by a multidisciplinary team of scientists.
The research should result in the successful defense of a PhD thesis.
Appointment:
The appointment will be initially for 1 year, which will be extended to 4 year provided that the applicant has proven to be well suited for the job. The project will start fall 2008.
Salary:
The gross salary starts at ¤ 2000,- per month in the 1st year, and will gradually increase to a maximum of ¤ 2558,- per month in the 4th year.
Location:
The Centre for Estuarine and Marine Ecology (NIOO-CEME) in Yerseke, The Netherlands .
Information:
Information and a detailed project description can be obtained by e-mail, via a.visser@nioo.knaw.nl.
Applications:
Written applications for PhD 2, vacancy number CEME-RE-08417, should be sent before 9th July 2008 sent to Prof. Dr. C.H.R. Heip, director NIOO-CEME, P.O. Box 140, 4400 AC Yerseke, The Netherlands or by e-mail to a.visser@nioo.knaw.nl.

Research Work Shop
COURSE WEEK
PROJECT WEEK
FINANCIAL ENGINEERING THE MATHEMATICS OF RISK MANAGEMENT
4 - 15 August 2008 Bandung
Organised jointly by
Laboratorium Matematika Indonesia (LabMath-Indonesia)
and
Universitas Katolik Parahyangan
in collaboration with
. Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands . University of Twente, the Netherlands
AIM AND DESCRIPTION
The aim of the two-week Research Work Shop (RWS) is to provide some background of methods and ideas in Financial Engineering. For the best performing participants, this may be the start of continued research, guided by one of the lecturers of the RWS.
This course aims to provide a thorough mathematical introduction to the modeling of financial derivatives. We start with dynamic models in discrete time for asset prices and derive the mathematical conditions that have to be used in such models to make them realistic representations of markets. Using binomial models, and the powerful concept of markets that are arbitrage-free, i.e. markets in which it is impossible to make riskless profits, we will be able to prove important results concerning the structure of such markets.
We then look at models in continuous time, and we will quickly realize that a realistic model for stock prices should lead to paths which are almost everywhere continuous but almost nowhere differentiable. The analysis of processes with this property is made possible through the use of Ito Calculus, which will be introduced in the course. It turns out that the structural properties that can be derived for the discrete time models mentioned earlier generalize to an astonishing extent in continuous time. This results in the powerful theory of risk neutral pricing, which is the cornerstone of modern mathematical finance.
To be able to use all these concepts, the last part of the course will also discuss in detail how option pricing models can be implemented in practice. The main aim of option pricing models is not to make riskless profits, or use advanced statistical techniques to profit from speculation. The aim of option markets is to provide a service which allows other parties to reduce their financial risk, in a way that is comparable to taking out insurance against possible misfortune. Option pricing theory therefore deals with more than establishing consistent pricing models. It is also essential to derive trading strategies which minimize the risk for the option trader. This leads to deep questions concerning the existence and uniqueness of certain stochastic integral representations for random variables, and financial engineering applications have thus lead to a lot of new mathematical research into such questions.
For some models there are explicit solutions which can be implemented using techniques varying from partial differential equations (such as the Black-Scholes equation) to Monte Carlo simulations under transformed probability measures. Efficient numerical implementation of these methods, and formal proofs of their convergence, form an essential part of mathematical finance and will therefore be discussed on an introductory level in this course too.
Mathematics is often extra exciting when quantitative problems in the real world require not only application of existing mathematical techniques, but the extension of these techniques due to new conditions or model assumptions which are essential for a realistic model. In this course we hope to show you how fruitful the interplay between the theory of stochastic processes and the practice of option trading has been, and to make you enthusiastic for one of the most successful applications of probability theory and functional analysis in modern times.

PROJECTS
Project 1 : PRICING AND HEDGING OF ASIAN OPTIONS.
We consider the pricing and hedging problem for an 'Asian option', an option with a payoff that depends on the average of certain asset price values, instead of a fixed end value. The numerical computations for this kind of options are known to be challenging, but many different and interesting ways to attack the problem have been proposed in the literature. We will focus in particularly on the question what the speed of convergence of these different methods will be.
Project 2 : INDONESIAN OPTIONS.
In September 2006, the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) introduced the trading of options on stocks of five companies: Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (TLKM), Astra International Tbk (ASII), HM Sampoerna Tbk (HMSP), Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA) and Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk (INDF). The regulations for trading in these options contain, among others, descriptions of put and call option contracts with the stock of one of the above-mentioned companies as underlying. Since these contracts are rather special, we will refer to them as Indonesian put or call option. In this project we try to find the precise regulations for Indonesian options from information that is officially published by the Jakarta Stock Exchange and use this to try to price and hedge such options.
Project 3 : ATM FORWARD PERCENTAGE CALL SPREADS.
The ATM Forward Percentage Call Spread is a special type of call option contract in which there is only a pay-off if the price of the underlying asset at a future maturity time is higher than the price at the initial time. In this case the pay-off is 1 euro for every percent of increase of price between those times up to a certain maximum. As such, an ATM Forward Percentage Call Spread is more like a trading strategy. They are not traded on the market, but they are an example of a so-called structured product. In this project we will calculate a price and a replication strategy for an ATM Forward Percentage Call Spread. Using historical and boot-strapped data, we try to get some insight into the risk of the replication strategy.
Project 4 : BASKET OPTIONS.
Basket options are options whose payoff depends on the value of a basket, i.e. a portfolio of assets. We will consider baskets of futures or forward contracts on different (but related) commodities that mature at the same time. Such basket options are very common in commodity markets. We assume that under the risk neutral measure the prices of the futures follow correlated Geometric Brownian Motions. In recent work, the probability distribution of the price of the basket was approximated by a generalized family of lognormal distributions. We start this project with a study of futures traded at Indonesian markets, and continue with a study of the distribution of sums of correlated lognormal distributions to test the approximation that have been proposed.
PROGRAMME LAY-OUT
The first week is a Course week, with lectures and exercise classes. This Course week can be attended by maximal 30 participants. At the end of this week, the projects will be introduced and Project groups will be formed. At most 20 participants can continue with these projects, when necessary selected based on their performance during the Course week. This project work will be executed during the whole second week with close guidance by the RWS lecturers. Participants will prepare written and oral presentations of their work. Arrangements for further activities will be made if applicable.
AWARD/CONTINUATION
For at most five of the best performing participants, a continued activity will be designed. Such a continuation may consist of further study and own research investigations in a specific topic. Working on the topic may include a period of several months as guest of LabMath-Indonesia in Bandung. During these periods, and as much as possible also during other periods using email for correspondence, tutorial guidance will be provided by one of the lecturers of the RWS. When achievements are good, sooner or later the results will lead to an application for a research grant, to an international publication, and/or to a visit or following a study programme at a university abroad, whatever is possible and desired. The best performing participants will be invited and guided to write a research proposal to be submitted to (inter-) national funding agencies.

PhD researcher on the succesful implementation of innovations in organizations
PhD-researcher on the project Successful implementation of innovations in organizations (1,0 fte) (Utrecht), 38 hours per week Utrecht University, Faculty of Social Sciences
Job description
PhD-researcher on the project Successful implementation of innovations (1,0 fte)
In the context of the High-Potential programme the Faculty of Social Sciences has one PhD position available for the project ‘Successful implementation of innovations in organizations’. The High Potentials project is financed by Utrecht University to
support interdisciplinary work of talented scientists. The PhD will work in an interdisciplinary group of sociologists and work and organizational psychologists.
As a member of the local Linschoten Institute for psychological research, the PhD for the project will be related to the National Research Institute of Psychology and Health.
Job description:
How do employees adapt to innovations
The central question of this project is: When can we expect that employees function optimal (perform well) and remain healthy within changing organizations and working environments. The project studies the process of adaptation of innovations by employees. It is driven by the view that employees are not the passive recipients of innovations, rather they purposefully and creatively craft the innovations (e.g. by
complaining about innovations or learning). The critical question is what are the individual characteristics (both with respect to relatively stable-traits and dynamic–behaviours) that facilitate adaptation of innovation within a given work context? Using transferable insights from social psychology and occupational health
psychology, the project will focus on the interplay between job demands and resources as well as individual demands and resources that influence employees’ responses to innovations. The individual ability to adopt particular innovations in certain circumstances will depend on the extent to which (a) changes in the work environment prompted by the innovation fit with
(b) individual characteristics as well as
(c) the individual ability to self-regulate emotions and actions (towards goal achievement) .
